Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, stated that the ongoing nationwide protest, titled ‘End Bad Governance In Nigeria’, has demonstrated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more popular in South Eastern Nigeria than in any other part of the country.

Farotimi, known for his criticism of President Tinubu, pointed out that the Southeast has not seen protests similar to those in other regions, suggesting that Tinubu holds greater popularity there.

His observations came after no protests were reported in the five states of the Southeast geopolitical zone on Friday, August 2. This stands in contrast to the widespread protests that have erupted across Nigeria since August 1, 2024, driven by concerns over widespread hunger and inflation.

“Based on the geographical spread of the ongoing protests, it is safe to conclude that Tinubu is much more loved in the land of the rising sun than in any other part of Nigeria,” Farotimi wrote on his X page.

It is noteworthy that Farotimi supported the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 election. In that election, Obi won all the states in the Southeast, while President Tinubu secured victories in most states in the West and northern Nigeria, where the current protests have been more prominent.
