The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has confirmed that its Air Component of Operation Whirl Punch conducted successful airstrikes in Bassa, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger on September 11, 2024, resulting in the elimination of at least 28 terrorists.

Details of the Operation

According to Capt. Kabiru Ali, Deputy Director of Public Relations and Information for the NAF, the operation was a response to a request for air support from friendly forces in the region. The airstrikes targeted terrorists who were observed engaging in a fierce firefight with friendly troops. The precision airstrikes effectively neutralized the terrorists, with 28 bodies recovered from the target area, alongside several weapons and burnt motorcycles.

Unconfirmed Reports of DSS Casualties

Counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama reported that the airstrikes were prompted by intelligence about a planned ambush on Department of State Services (DSS) facilities. The publication also claimed that two DSS operatives were killed during the conflict. However, Capt. Ali did not address these claims or provide information on the involvement of DSS assets in the operation.

NAF’s Commitment

Capt. Ali emphasized the NAF’s dedication to safeguarding the nation and supporting other security agencies in combatting banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. He assured Nigerians that the NAF will continue its efforts to eliminate threats to national peace and security through both independent and collaborative air operations.
