In a challenging turn for Nigerian clubs in African competitions, only Enyimba Football Club will represent the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) in the group stage of the CAF inter-club tournaments this season.

Enyimba, a nine-time Nigerian champion, secured their place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage with a dramatic 3-2 victory in a penalty shootout against Burkina Faso’s Etoile de Filante in Uyo. Despite both legs of the matchup ending in a goalless draw, Enyimba showcased resilience during the penalties to advance.

Conversely, reigning NPFL champions Enugu Rangers were knocked out of the CAF Champions League after losing 3-2 on aggregate to Angola’s Sagrada Esperanca.

This season marks a significant comeback for Enyimba, who had missed out on continental competitions for the previous two seasons. Their current performance not only highlights their determination but also underscores the importance of their success for Nigeria’s representation in future continental tournaments. For the NPFL to regain its full quota of four clubs next season, Enyimba will need to progress to at least the quarterfinals of the Confederation Cup.
