The federal government has postponed the planned meeting with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which was initially scheduled for today, Monday, 26th August. ASUU president Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed the postponement, though no reason was provided for the rescheduling.

The meeting is now set to take place on Wednesday, 28th August. This development comes after the government, represented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced plans to meet with ASUU to discuss the union’s demands during an appearance on Television Continental’s “Beyond 100 Days” program last Thursday.

ASUU recently issued a 21-day ultimatum to the government following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the University of Ibadan last week. The union has been pressing for the implementation of previous agreements, which include issues related to salaries, university funding, and improved working conditions.

During the TV program, Prof. Mamman acknowledged receiving the strike notice from ASUU and assured that the government is working to prevent further disruptions to the academic calendar. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the union’s concerns and stated that the upcoming meeting would aim to find common ground to avert another round of industrial action.

ASUU’s key demands include improved welfare for its members, increased funding for universities, and a halt to the proliferation of new universities across the country.
