Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a stern warning to Israel following the assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Pezeshkian condemned the killing as a “cowardly” act and vowed that Israel would face consequences for its actions.
In a statement on the X platform, Pezeshkian emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran would vigorously defend its honor and sovereignty. He declared that the country would ensure that “terrorist invaders” would regret their actions.
Haniyeh was killed during an Israeli strike while he was in Tehran for the inauguration of Iran’s new president. This incident follows a recent Israeli operation in Beirut that targeted a Hezbollah stronghold, resulting in the death of a senior commander from the Iran-backed group. Israel linked this operation to a recent rocket attack on the Golan Heights.
Hamas confirmed Haniyeh’s death, noting that he was killed along with a bodyguard in the strike on his Tehran residence. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also confirmed the incident, labeling it as a direct assault on Iranian soil.
