The Lagos Mass Transit Red Line Rail is set to commence partial operations today, marking a significant milestone in the state’s transportation infrastructure.
The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) spokesperson, Kolawole Ojelabi, announced that starting today, the Red Line will operate four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado. Passengers will be able to use the service for free during this initial phase.
The Red Line is a crucial part of Lagos’s Strategic Transport Master Plan, which includes six rail lines and one monorail. This project is designed to improve connectivity between Lagos and Ogun State, benefiting the many workers and business owners who commute between the two states.
Ojelabi highlighted that this partial operation follows extensive planning, staff training, and a successful six-week trial run without passengers to ensure the system’s safety and efficiency.
“Beginning Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line will engage with non-paying passengers in organized groups to gather feedback before commercial operations start,” Ojelabi stated. He emphasized that this step is crucial in realizing Lagos State’s vision of a modern, integrated, and sustainable transportation system.
The first phase of the Red Line covers a 27-kilometer route from Agbado to Oyingbo, offering a reliable and affordable transport option aimed at reducing traffic congestion and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
