The Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Sani Magaji Tambuwal, has reiterated his commitment to prioritizing human capacity development as part of his mission to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the National Assembly.

Speaking at the opening of a four-day capacity-building program for National Assembly staff in Abuja on Monday, Tambuwal emphasized the importance of continuous training and retraining for professional growth, especially in a rapidly evolving work environment.

“My administration identified human capacity building as a core priority in our efforts to strengthen and reposition the National Assembly to meet its statutory responsibilities,” Tambuwal stated. He stressed that modernization, transparency, and accountability are crucial for the Assembly, which requires ongoing staff development to boost efficiency and commitment.

Tambuwal highlighted that in 2023 alone, the National Assembly trained 3,990 staff members across Salary Grade Levels 4 to 16, equipping them with the necessary skills to perform their duties effectively. The current four-day program aims to reorient staff for improved productivity and service delivery.

He underscored the role of continuous training in keeping staff updated with industry trends, expanding career opportunities, and driving innovation. “The effectiveness of our legislative processes and our impact on governance depend significantly on your dedication and quality services,” he added.

Tambuwal also praised the often overlooked but essential work of National Assembly staff, who support various legislative functions, including bill scrutiny, committee organization, and legislative research. He urged participants to approach the training with an open mind and a determination to improve, emphasizing that the collective progress of the National Assembly relies on individual contributions.

In a goodwill message, the Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission, Engr. Ahmed Kadi Amshi, echoed Tambuwal’s sentiments. He highlighted the staff’s critical role in supporting the work of elected representatives and called for a renewed focus on staff training, professional development, and adopting modern, technology-enabled methods to enhance productivity and responsiveness.

Amshi stressed that the public expects efficient, effective, and responsive governance, and it is the responsibility of the National Assembly staff to provide services that create a conducive environment for this to occur. He pledged to strengthen transparency and accountability within the National Assembly Service, aiming to model good governance that earns the trust of both the Assembly leadership and citizens.

This capacity-building initiative is regarded as a significant step towards renewing the commitment to excellence in service to the legislature and the nation.
