Eight young Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and returned to Nigeria, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 113. The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed gratitude to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for facilitating their return.
The girls, aged 15 to 22, were lured to Ghana with false promises of employment but were forced into sexual exploitation. They have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for safe accommodation and reintegration with their families.
Dabiri-Erewa also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghanaian authorities and other key figures, including Chief Callistus Elozieuwa of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, for their cooperation in rescuing the victims. A Nigerian trafficker, Ms. Favour Ugwu, was jailed for eight years in Ghana for her involvement in human trafficking.
