On October 1, 2024, Nigerian youths in Abuja joined the nationwide #FearlessInOctober protests, criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration for attempting to silence dissent while corruption among politicians continues unchecked. The demonstration, a continuation of the #EndBadGovernance protests from August, was fueled by the growing economic hardship in the country.
One protester expressed frustration over the government’s efforts to stifle citizens’ rights, stating, “The Nigerian government wants to suppress and oppress us, but today we’re showing them that our voices cannot be silenced.” Another protester highlighted the severe corruption and suffering faced by ordinary Nigerians, citing rising food and fuel prices.
Reports of police violence against peaceful protesters in areas like Jabi and Utako surfaced, with officers firing tear gas and ammunition, forcing demonstrators to flee. Despite the heavy-handed response, the protesters made it clear that they will continue to demand accountability from the government.
