The Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) has expressed concerns over the minimal profits Nigeria earns from its onion trade, despite being one of Africa’s largest producers, with nearly two million tons of onions produced annually. Most of the onions are sold raw, limiting the country’s ability to maximize its potential.

At a stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe, NEPC Executive Director, Ms. Nonye Ayeni, emphasized the need for value-added products like onion powder, flakes, and oil to improve export earnings. NEPC aims to develop a comprehensive Onion Export Strategy, encouraging stakeholders to enhance processing and export practices to strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global market.
