The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans for a nationwide peaceful prayer procession on August 29 in support of its President, Joe Ajaero. This decision follows an invitation from the police for Ajaero to appear for questioning on charges including criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime.

In a letter issued to all affiliates and state councils, NLC General Secretary Emmanuel Ugboaja emphasized that the procession is a response to what the NLC views as baseless accusations against Ajaero. Ugboaja has called on NLC members across the country to join the demonstration to show solidarity.

Members in Abuja and across the states are urged to gather at their respective NLC headquarters by 8:00 a.m. on August 29. They will accompany Ajaero to the police for his scheduled interrogation. Those in state capitals are advised to assemble at their state NLC secretariats and participate in a peaceful march to their local police headquarters, where they will hold a prayer session until Ajaero’s meeting with the police is complete.

Ugboaja stressed that the march is a stand against what the NLC perceives as attempts to intimidate its leadership and suppress the voice of Nigerian workers. He urged participants to maintain peace and order throughout the event. If Ajaero is detained, the NLC plans to initiate an indefinite strike.

He underscored the importance of this demonstration for defending civil rights and upholding justice, fairness, and democracy in Nigeria.
