Despite heavy police and military presence, protesters determined to continue their fight against bad governance converged in large numbers on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at two key locations in Abuja: the Apo and Lokogoma districts.

Avoiding the heavily guarded MKO Abiola National Stadium and Eagle Square, the demonstrators gathered as early as 7 am, carrying placards demanding an end to hunger and the reversal of the fuel subsidy removal. This marked the tenth day of protests, which began on August 1.

The initial protests, however, took a violent turn when hoodlums hijacked the movement, leading to widespread looting, destruction of infrastructure, and attacks on motorists. The situation escalated in several Northern states, including Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Bauchi, where some demonstrators flew foreign flags and called for a regime change—a move that has been strongly condemned by Nigerians, security agencies, and even the original protest organizers.
