Dr. Erisa Sarki Danladi, an advocate for women and children’s rights and chairperson of the Sunflower Farmers Association in Gombe State, is leading efforts to promote sunflower farming as a profitable and less labor-intensive crop. Initially focused on maize farming, Dr. Danladi transitioned to sunflower cultivation after observing local farmers growing the crop alongside millet and maize. She quickly developed a passion for sunflowers and now manages 10 hectares of sunflower farms, while the association farms 50 hectares collectively.

Sunflower farming requires minimal water and thrives in dry-season farming with controlled irrigation. It offers higher profitability since sunflower seeds are sold by weight, and oil extraction adds further value. Dr. Danladi highlighted the importance of high-quality seeds and organic fertilization to boost yields and increase the crop’s export potential. She also called on the government to support farmers with fertilisers and seeds to maximize sunflower production.
