Vice President Kashim Shettima has emphasized the importance of deepening the relationship between Nigeria and the European Union (EU) to tackle pressing issues such as malnutrition and other humanitarian challenges.

Shettima made these remarks during a courtesy visit by an EU delegation led by the outgoing EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela Isopi, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday. He acknowledged the EU’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s humanitarian efforts, particularly in the North East and North West regions.

“The EU’s assistance has been invaluable in strengthening our bilateral relations, especially in humanitarian aid and trade,” Shettima stated. He highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance, noting that it is projected to become the third most populous country globally by 2050, following China and India.

The Vice President praised Ambassador Isopi’s work, recognizing her role in facilitating many critical transactions and humanitarian initiatives. He also appreciated her involvement in the peace accord process leading up to the 2023 elections and her continued advocacy for humanitarian causes.

Shettima reiterated Nigeria’s need for ongoing EU support, particularly in addressing the humanitarian and security challenges facing the country.
