The Abia State Government has announced ambitious plans to overhaul 200 Primary Health Centers across the state by the end of this year. Governor Alex Otti’s administration is set to begin renovations in September, aiming for completion within 100 days.

Renovation of Health Centers

State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, shared details of the initiative during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting. The project, managed by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, will benefit all 184 wards in Abia. The goal is to enhance the quality of healthcare facilities before the holiday season, providing what Kanu described as a “Christmas gift” to the people of Abia.

Public Land Recovery Efforts

In addition to healthcare improvements, the Abia State government is taking steps to reclaim public lands illegally occupied by private individuals. The recovery committee has already reclaimed land from Government College Umuahia and is committed to recovering all such lands despite potential resistance from those who have unlawfully taken them.

Educational Reforms and Infrastructure

The state government is also focusing on educational reforms. Efforts are underway to verify and address the status of closed private schools, train teachers, and evaluate recent educational examinations.

In terms of infrastructure, 108 roads have been maintained or rehabilitated through direct labor. Designs for several major road projects, including Ntigha-Mbawsi-Umuala and Onuimo-Tower of Peace roads, are progressing.

Health and Safety Updates

The state has reported 13 suspected cases of Monkeypox in Isiala Ngwa, with one case confirmed and three pending. The government is also addressing cholera concerns, with only two confirmed cases reported and isolation centers being bolstered.

Road Expansion and Compensation

Regarding road expansion, the government has completed identifying properties to be demolished along the Umuikaa-Owerrinta road. Compensation for affected structures will begin soon, as part of the broader infrastructural development plan.

Summary

The Abia State Government’s multi-faceted approach aims to improve healthcare, reclaim public assets, enhance education, and expand infrastructure. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to drive positive change and address pressing issues across the state.
