Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a constitutional amendment to establish a single six-year term for the President and state governors. In a letter to the National Assembly, Atiku urged the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review to consider rotating the presidency between the North and South across the six geopolitical zones.

He suggested amending Section 135(2) to limit the President’s term to six years, and also recommended raising the minimum educational qualification for candidates to an Ordinary National Diploma (OND). Additionally, he proposed granting political parties more authority in selecting candidates.
