In a recent interview, Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, shared his thoughts on President Bola Tinubu’s potential re-election bid in 2027. Sani argued that the southern region should take the lead in the 2027 elections, while the North should wait until 2031 to produce the next president.

Sani highlighted that the Nigerian Constitution allows any region to contest elections, but he emphasized the importance of power rotation for national unity. He recalled Tinubu’s pivotal role in helping former President Muhammadu Buhari secure the presidency after several unsuccessful attempts and suggested that the North should reciprocate by supporting Tinubu’s re-election.

Despite Tinubu not winning in key northern states during the previous election, Sani expressed confidence in Tinubu’s chances if he successfully addresses pressing issues in Northern Nigeria. He urged the northern political elite to respect the power rotation principle, allowing the South to complete its eight-year term before the presidency returns to the North.

Sani also criticized some northern political elites for their eagerness to regain power in 2027, arguing that it is driven by personal ambitions rather than regional interests. He believes that if Tinubu effectively tackles challenges like security, education, and poverty in the North, his re-election in 2027 is likely, regardless of the current resentment from some northern elites.
