Celine Dion, the acclaimed Canadian singer, graced the stage once again on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This performance marked her return to public view after a four-year hiatus.
The 56-year-old icon delivered a heartfelt rendition of Édith Piaf’s “Hymne à l’amour” from the base of the Eiffel Tower. This was her first public performance since 2020, due to her battle with stiff-person syndrome.
Dion expressed her delight and honor at participating in the prestigious event. “I’m honored to have performed tonight for the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony, and so full of joy to be back in one of my very favorite cities!” she shared in a statement.
She also extended her admiration to the athletes, celebrating their dedication and perseverance. “Most of all, I’m so happy to be celebrating these amazing athletes, with all their stories of sacrifice and determination. Whether or not you take home a medal, I hope being here means your dreams have come true!” she added.
This performance was Dion’s second appearance at the Olympic Games, her first being at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics. Despite her ongoing health challenges, she had previously expressed her determination to return to the stage, even under difficult circumstances.
According to TMZ, Dion was compensated for her performance at the Paris 2024 Games.
