Academic unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), are set to meet with a reconstituted federal government committee next week to renegotiate the 2009 agreement. ASUU’s National President, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the planned discussions, which will address critical issues affecting university staff and students.

This meeting follows recent government actions aimed at preventing future strikes. Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, emphasized the administration’s commitment to addressing ASUU’s concerns, which include unpaid salary arrears, the transition to the University Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS), and payment of earned allowances.

The committee, reconstituted in October with a three-month mandate, aims to bring about resolutions that could improve Nigeria’s educational sector stability.
