New Tax Reforms Under Tinubu’s Government

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is proposing a new tax system aimed at simplifying Nigeria’s tax landscape and reducing the burden of multiple taxes on individuals and businesses.

Key Changes in the Tax System

In a recent interview with Channels Television, Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, announced that the goal is to consolidate all existing taxes into a single-digit system. This would mean fewer than ten taxes within a specified period.

He explained that the reforms are designed to enhance cooperation between federal and state tax authorities, focusing on areas like data sharing, tax intelligence, and improving the skills of tax officials.

Oyedele’s Statements

“We aim to reduce all taxes to single digits by the end of the reforms. Our objective is to enable tax authorities to collect efficiently while allowing other government agencies to concentrate on their core duties, fostering an environment where the economy can thrive,” said Oyedele.

He also mentioned efforts to pass a comprehensive Nigerian Tax Administration Bill, which would streamline taxpayer registration, returns, assessments, and audits using advanced technology.

The Nigerian tax system, currently one of the most outdated globally, will undergo a transformation that could modernize tax practices and potentially drive economic growth.

Future Outlook: Naira’s Potential Weakness

A recent report from BMI, a subsidiary of Fitch Solutions, projects a significant devaluation of the Naira in the coming years. The study suggests that by 2028, the Naira could fall to ₦1,993 per US dollar, a considerable drop from the rate of ₦306/$ seen in 2018.

The report, titled “Weak Naira and Structural Challenges to Constrain Nigeria’s Medical Devices Market Growth,” emphasizes the potential consequences for Nigeria’s economy, particularly the pharmaceutical and medical device industries, which rely heavily on imports.

Implications for the Medical Sector

The study predicts that the continued decline of the Naira will result in:

  • Higher costs for imported medical devices, as over 95% of these devices are sourced internationally.
  • Reduced consumer purchasing power, limiting the ability of patients and health systems to afford essential medical technologies.
  • Potential disruption in high-demand areas like diagnostics, orthopaedics, and dental products.

However, the report also suggests a silver lining: a weaker Naira could boost the competitiveness of locally manufactured medical devices. This might foster growth in domestic production, despite ongoing challenges such as outdated technology, insufficient infrastructure, and a lack of skilled labor, even with government incentives.

The forecast underscores both the obstacles and opportunities that a devaluing Naira presents for Nigeria’s economy and healthcare sector.

Gathering consensus, strength to address challenges of times

By Liu Lingling, Li Yingqi, People’s Daily

The world today is experiencing disorder, slowing growth, uneven development, and a loss of focus in governance. There is an urgent need for all parties to demonstrate the wisdom to see the changes, the ability to deal with the changes, and the courage to make changes.

The 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the 19th G20 Summit, which will be held in Lima, Peru’s capital, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this month, will serve as important opportunities for all parties to work together to address challenges and promote sustainable development.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend the two important meetings upon invitation. He will expound on China’s policies and propositions on advancing Asia-Pacific cooperation, as well as China’s firm support for multilateralism, an open world economy, and sustainable development, contributingChinese wisdom and solutions to keeping Asia-Pacific cooperation in the right direction and pushing for the reform of the global governance system.

Themed “Empower. Include. Grow” and “Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet,” the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the 19th G20 Summit will mirror the reality of the times and make common voices.

The emergence and development of the APEC and the G20 reflect the evolving trends of world multipolarity and economic globalization.

In the world today, changes on a scale unseen in a century are unfolding at an accelerating pace. The world economy faces multiple risks and challenges.

Should the world uphold multilateralism or tread the path of unilateralism? Should it adhere to open cooperation or allow protectionism to rise? Faced with this crucial decision, the APEC and G20 must conform to the trend of the times, and build an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.

All countries, regardless of their size and strength, are equal members of the international community, and multilateralism is key to coping with global challenges. The APEC and G20 should take the lead in promoting multilateralism, uphold the principles of extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefits, and steer global governance in a fairer and more equitable direction.

In September last year, the African Union officially became a member of the G20, which marked a significant step in the development of the G20 mechanism and reflected the reform direction of the global governance system. This has given more representation and a greater voice to developing countries in global governance, which is necessary to uphold justice and fairness, and maintain global stability.

Development is the “golden key” to solving global challenges. To this end, all parties should work together to advance trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, create a just, fair, and non-discriminatory trade and investment environment, oppose all forms of protectionism, and build more bridges of cooperation while pushing back against the “small yard, high fence”approaches and trade barriers.

To promote global development cooperation, the APEC and G20 should take a people-centered approach, drive the full implementation of the U.N 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, put development back on the international agenda as a central priority, and make regional and global development more equitable, effective and inclusive, so that no country will be left behind.

Facing a new wave of scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation, global development is presented with new opportunities and challenges.

The APEC and G20 should join forces to unleash the potential for innovation-driven growth and draw up rules based on extensive participation and broad-based consensus to foster an enabling environment for innovation-driven development. As China accelerates high-quality development, innovation holds the key to China’s development prospects.

In the face of environmental challenges, all countries are in a community with destinies linked, and no country can stay immune. The APEC and G20 should follow a people-centered approach andfoster a sound environment to buttress sustainable economic and social development worldwide.

China remains as determined as ever to pursue green developmentthat prioritizes eco-environmental conservation. It stands ready to enrich global supply with high-quality green technologies and products, so as to make greater contributions to the global fight against climate change and the global transition toward green and low-carbon growth.

The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China has outlined a grand blueprint for further deepening of reform comprehensively to advance Chinese modernization.

The positive momentum of China’s steady economic growth is injecting positive energy into global economic recovery. Looking ahead, China will remain firmly committed to advancing high-level opening up to continuously provide new development opportunities for countries around the world.

Facing common challenges, common needs, and common responsibilities, China will work together with all parties to push for the reform of the global governance system, gathering consensus and strength to address the challenges of the times.

APC Youth Leaders Accuse Party Insiders of Targeting Yahaya Bello, El-Rufai for Political Reasons

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth Leaders Forum (AYLF) has voiced strong concerns over what they describe as politically motivated actions against former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In a statement released on Tuesday, the youth leaders claimed that certain influential figures within the APC are behind what they perceive as a campaign of persecution, driven by ambitions related to the 2027 elections.

Claims of Politically Driven Harassment

According to the APC youth leaders, Yahaya Bello, who played a key role in the party’s success, particularly in Kogi State, is allegedly being targeted by EFCC due to internal power struggles. The group suggested that some prominent party members, with an eye on future political positions, are using anti-corruption agencies to weaken those who were instrumental in recent electoral victories.

The AYLF, representing youth members from Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), claimed that the former Kogi State governor’s legal troubles are an effort to diminish his political influence. The youth leaders emphasized Bello’s compliance with legal processes, suggesting he has been “on the side of the law” throughout his ongoing case. They argued that those directing these efforts against him are ignoring other figures they believe to be more deserving of scrutiny if genuine anti-corruption efforts are the goal.

Impact of Internal Party Tensions

The youth forum also voiced concerns over the treatment of other key party figures, including former Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna. They believe that the current harassment of significant party contributors like Bello and El-Rufai could damage the APC’s unity, as these individuals were pivotal in securing electoral wins for the party, particularly in the recent presidential and governorship elections.

Call for a Return to Focused Leadership

The AYLF’s statement, signed by National President Alh Abdullahi Danbaba and National Secretary Dr. Chike Ihedioha, urged President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate strong leadership in this period of internal strife. They called for the President to address what they view as undue harassment driven by a “2027 agenda” and to ensure that political rivalries do not harm the party’s reputation and governance goals.

The youth leaders are advocating for the withdrawal of what they termed politically motivated corruption cases currently under the EFCC, Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and other anti-corruption bodies. They stressed that allowing these agencies to operate free from political influence would restore credibility to the anti-corruption efforts and maintain party unity.

Emphasis on Fairness in Anti-Corruption Efforts

The statement concluded with a plea for the EFCC to focus on genuine corruption cases rather than being influenced by internal party politics. The AYLF underscored the importance of recognizing and supporting those who have significantly contributed to the party’s growth, warning that failure to do so could lead to internal fractures that might impact the APC’s future success.

By highlighting the internal challenges within the ruling party, the APC youth leaders have brought attention to the broader issue of how political maneuvering can influence anti-corruption measures, a key area of public and political interest in Nigeria.

EFCC Detains Former NCDMB Executive Over Alleged $35 Million Fraud in Brass Project

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has detained Timber Kesiye Wabote, the former Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), in connection with an alleged $35 million fraud related to the Brass Project. This development follows ongoing investigations into a failed refinery project for which the substantial funds were allocated.

Sources reveal that the arrest is linked to previous detention of Akintoye Adeoye Akindele, Managing Director of Atlantic International Refinery and Petrochemical Limited. Akindele is under scrutiny for alleged misappropriation, money laundering, and the diversion of public funds amounting to $35 million.

Wabote is currently being held at the EFCC’s Abuja facility as investigations continue.

According to reports, Akindele was the driving force behind the Energy Infrastructure Park project, located in Okpoama Community, Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. The NCDMB, under Wabote’s leadership, reportedly committed $35 million in counterpart funding to support the development of the project, which included a 2,000-barrel-per-day refinery, a jetty, gas plant, power plant, data center, and tank farm.

Wabote served as the Executive Secretary of the NCDMB from 2016 to 2023 and was actively involved in overseeing the board’s investment in the Brass Free Trade Zone (FTZ) project.

Investigative reports indicate that despite the significant funding disbursed by the NCDMB in December 2020, the project has seen minimal progress. Akindele, who received the funds to spearhead the construction, allegedly abandoned the project, raising concerns about the management of the substantial financial resources.

The EFCC’s preliminary findings reveal that during Wabote’s tenure, the NCDMB financed a total of 17 projects, including the stalled 2,000 BPD refinery and associated facilities at the Brass FTZ. The investigation aims to determine the extent of financial discrepancies and the role of those involved in the allocation and management of the funds.

This high-profile case underscores the EFCC’s commitment to probing instances of financial mismanagement in Nigeria’s energy sector as the agency continues to scrutinize the use of public resources in various development projects.

Lakurawa: Rising Terror Threat in Northwestern Nigeria Following Niger Coup

The Nigerian military has recently identified Lakurawa, a relatively new terror group, as a growing threat infiltrating Sokoto and Kebbi states from the Niger Republic, particularly after the recent coup in Nigeria’s neighboring country. Despite the recent attention, reports indicate that Lakurawa, linked to al-Qaeda, has been active since before last year’s political upheaval in Niger.

Last Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, highlighted Lakurawa as a significant security concern in the North-west. He noted that the group’s origins can be traced to Mali and Niger, with its emergence coinciding with the breakdown of military collaboration between Nigeria and Niger after the coup.

Though some social media narratives associate Lakurawa with the Islamic State in the Greater Sahel (ISGS), past studies suggest otherwise. A 2022 study conducted by Murtala Rufa’i, James Barnett, and Abdulaziz Abdulaziz links the group more closely with al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), rejecting associations with Boko Haram.

The Lakurawa militants, similar to Ansaru—a known al-Qaeda affiliate—often claim to protect local communities but have been involved in violent attacks on military installations and civilians deemed adversaries. They have reportedly extended their influence into areas of Kaduna, such as Birnin Gwari, raising concerns over the spread of jihadist ideologies in the troubled North-west.

In 2017, Lakurawa was initially brought into Sokoto State by local leaders from Gudu and Tangaza LGAs to counter the threats posed by Zamfarawa bandits. The group started with fewer than 50 youths but has since expanded to over 200 members, mainly young men aged 18–35, according to research by Rufa’i.

Initially welcomed by some traditional leaders to restore order, Lakurawa’s violent shift began with the murder of a Tangaza district leader who had originally supported them. Since then, they have imposed strict rules, collected “Zakat” (charitable donations), and punished those engaging in activities deemed un-Islamic, such as music and dancing.

Joint military operations in late 2018 briefly suppressed the group, but local support allowed Lakurawa to persist. Community leaders who had initially enlisted them turned against the group as their actions diverged from their stated mission.

Following the recent coup in Niger, Lakurawa’s activities have intensified, capitalizing on the weakened military cooperation between Nigerian and Nigerien forces. Their latest resurgence has been marked by a new alignment with bandits and some Fulani communities, challenging the outlawed Yan Sakai vigilante group.

Lakurawa’s evolution from a bandit-countering militia to a violent, ideologically-driven insurgency poses an ongoing challenge to Nigerian security efforts in the region. The complex ties with local communities and broader jihadist networks underscore the difficulties in fully addressing the threat they represent.
