The Rich Cultural Heritage and History of the Ham People of Southern Kaduna

The Ham ethnic group, also known as Jaba, is predominantly found in the southern part of Kaduna State. They were given the name “Jaba” by the Hausa people, a label they have since rejected.

Historically, the Ham people are believed to have migrated from a village called Ham in Egypt, first settling in Nok thousands of years ago. They chose this location for its natural defenses, such as mountains, loose sand, and forests filled with deadly reptiles that offered protection from invaders.

The Ham land spans four local government areas in Kaduna State: Jaba, Kagarko, Kachia, and Jema’a. They inhabit places like Nok, Kwoi, Ghatzhi (Kurmin Dangana), Zheik (Kurmin Musa), Dung (Jaban Kogo), Chori, Fai, Daddu, and Ghi-kyaar (Kurmin Jatau), among others. They also occupy a small part of Nasarawa State, which borders Kaduna. The Ham people speak a unique dialect called Hyam and are renowned for their colorful tribal attire in red, yellow, and green.

Internationally, the Ham people are recognized for farming two main crops: Acha and Ginger. Ginger remains the primary economic staple for the Ham people to this day.

Kwoi (Har Kwain) is a significant settlement for the Ham people. It was the first gospel missionary station in Southern Kaduna and is home to the famous Nok terracotta, dating back over 5,000 years. Kwoi also houses the seat of the Ham paramount ruler, known as the Kpop Ham. The current Kpop Ham is a first-class chief and the longest-serving chief in Southern Kaduna, who, along with his council, adjudicates matters affecting the Ham people.

The Ham people are celebrated for their delicious cultural delicacies made from Fonio, culturally known as Acha. One popular dish is the Fonio pudding called “Sap,” typically enjoyed with milk and sugar. Acha can also be served as a meal called gus-gus, similar to couscous. Additionally, Acha is used as a “swallow” to accompany the delicious draw soup Karkashi and occasionally okra.

Acha is not only tasty but also offers numerous health benefits. It is gluten-free, diabetic-friendly, energy-boosting, and rich in iron. Research indicates that Acha enhances the immune system, boosts brainpower, and promotes mental well-being.

If you find yourself in the southern region of Kaduna State, I highly recommend trying the traditional dishes prepared by the Ham people for a flavorful and nutritious experience.

My name is ShimNom (God’s love), and I am proudly Ham.
Now Dwo Ghatzhi (God bless Kurmin Dangana)

Nom Dwo Kaduna State (God bless Kaduna State)

China demonstrates major country responsibility in maintaining regional peace, stability

By He Yin, People’s Daily

At the invitation of the Chinese side, high-level representatives of 14 Palestinian factions recently held a reconciliation dialogue in Beijing. They signed the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity.

This was an important historical moment in the Palestinian liberation cause, and an important step to solve the Palestinian question and achieve peace and stability in the Middle East. It has brought precious hope to the long-suffering Palestinian people.

The international community highly appreciates China’s active mediation and promotion of internal reconciliation in Palestine, considering it a clear demonstration of China’s commitment to a just stance and the country’s role as a responsible major country in safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Only when Palestinian factions speak as one can the voice of justice be loud and clear, and only when they join hands and march forward shoulder to shoulder can they succeed in their national liberation cause.

The most important consensus from the Beijing talks is to achieve the reconciliation and unity among the 14 factions; the core outcome is the affirmation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people; the biggest highlight is the agreement on establishing an interim government of national reconciliation focusing on the post-conflict reconstruction of Gaza; and the strongest call is for truly establishing an independent State of Palestine in accordance with relevant UN resolutions.

Mahmoud al-Aloul, deputy chief of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement (Fatah), noted that China is a beacon of light, and its efforts to promote reconciliation among various factions in Palestine are rare and commendable in the international arena.

Middle Eastern countries believe that the successful signing of the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity fully demonstrates China’s unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their pursuit of restoring their legitimate national rights and justice.

The Palestinian question is the fundamental problem behind peace in the Middle East. Without a just resolution to the Palestinian question, there can be no lasting peace and stability in the region.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent congratulatory messages to a UN Special Commemorative Meeting in Observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People for 11 consecutive years. He also attended the BRICS extraordinary virtual summit on the Palestinian-Israeli issue, and has put forward initiatives and proposals on resolving the Palestinian question on multiple occasions, contributing Chinese wisdom and solutions to the resolution of the Palestinian question.

Promoting the realization of Palestine’s internal reconciliation and solidarity is conducive to the just cause of the Palestinian people and the early, comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the question of Palestine.

China always supports Palestinian factions in achieving reconciliation and solidarity through dialogue and consultation and stands ready to provide platforms and opportunities for all Palestinian factions to carry out dialogue for reconciliation.

Mustafa Barghouti, secretary-general of the Palestinian National Initiative Party, said, “China is decent and honest, genuinely wanting to help us without interfering in our internal affairs, and supports our cause by strengthening our unity.”

Currently, the spillover effects of the Gaza conflict are becoming apparent, causing concerns about the situation in the Middle East. China believes that the pressing task is to realize a comprehensive ceasefire as quickly as possible; the key priority is to ensure humanitarian assistance; and the fundamental way out is to implement the two-State solution.

At the opening ceremony of the 10th ministerial conference of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum, Xi once put forward China’s propositions. He said war should not continue indefinitely, justice should not be absent forever, and commitment to the two-State solution should not be wavered at will.

China, together with the international community, will work with utmost urgency to promote a comprehensive ceasefire and end the conflict. The will also provide multiple batches of emergency humanitarian assistance to Gaza through bilateral and multilateral channels.

During the reconciliation talks in Beijing this time, China proposed a three-step initiative. The first step is to promote a comprehensive, lasting and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible and ensure humanitarian assistance and relief access. The second step is to uphold the principle of “the Palestinians governing Palestine” and work together to promote post-war governance in Gaza. The third step is to promote Palestine to become a full member of the UN and begin to implement the two-state solution.

China’s initiative, which is rooted in the present and looks to the future, helps to build consensus among all parties and steer the Palestinian question back onto the right track of political resolution.

China’s efforts to promote internal reconciliation of Palestine represent the latest practice in implementing Global Security Initiative and maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East. In recent years, China has put forward a five-point initiative on achieving security and stability in the Middle East, a four-point proposal on solving the Syrian issue, a three-point vision for the implementation of the two-state solution between Palestine and Israel, and has successfully facilitated dialogue between Saudi Arabia and Iran in Beijing, leading to the restoration of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The purpose was to encourage regional countries to unite and strengthen themselves, and to resolve their conflicts and differences through dialogue and consultation.

China has no self-interest in the Middle East and does not engage in “exclusive blocs.” It continues to play a role in promoting conflict de-escalation and easing tensions, firmly supporting the people of Middle Eastern countries in taking control of their own future. Abdulaziz Alshehhi, a senior researcher in political analysis from the United Arab Emirates, said China has become one of the most important forces supporting peace and development in the Middle East.

On the Palestinian issue, China stands on the side of peace, justice and conscience. China sincerely hopes that the various factions in Palestine can achieve national unity and independence through internal reconciliation at an early stage. Looking ahead, China will continue to make unremitting efforts with all relevant parties to contribute to the peace and stability in the Middle East.

Tragic Plane Crash in Wyoming Claims Lives of Three Gospel Music Legends

Three members of The Nelons, a celebrated quartet inducted into the Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame, were among seven individuals killed in a plane crash in Wyoming on Friday afternoon.

Kelly Nelon Clark, co-founder of The Nelons, her husband Jason Clark, and their daughter Amber Nelon Kistler were among those who perished in the crash, as confirmed by their daughter Autumn Nelon Streetman.

Streetman expressed gratitude for the support and prayers extended to her family during this difficult time. She also mentioned the loss of Nelon Kistler’s husband, Nathan Kistler, family friend Melodi Hodges, and Larry and Melissa Haynie.

The group was en route to the Gaither Homecoming Cruise to Alaska, a popular gospel music event. Gaither Music Group identified Melodi Hodges as the band’s assistant and noted that Larry Haynie was the aircraft’s pilot. The aircraft involved was a single-engine turboprop Pilatus PC-12/47E.

The crash occurred around 1 p.m. local time in Campbell County, Wyoming, north of Gillette. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is sending a team to investigate the crash site, which is in a remote area. The initial report is expected within 30 days, with a final report on the cause potentially taking up to two years.

The Nelons, known for their significant contributions to gospel music, were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 and won 10 GMA Dove Awards throughout their career.

Catholic bishops slam Olympics ceremony for ‘mockery of Christianity’

French bishops complained on Saturday about the “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games which has upset some conservatives and has drawn mixed reviews.

The opening had offered “wonderful moments of beauty, joy, rich emotions, and was universally praised,” a statement from the French Bishops’ Conference said.

“However, this ceremony unfortunately included scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity, which we deeply regret,” the bishops said.

While they did not refer to specific scenes, the ceremony featured a segment entitled “Festivity” which began with a group sat at a table, including several drag queens, which was reminiscent of the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus is said to have taken with his apostles.

It was set to music by lesbian activist DJ Barbara Butch.

“We think of all Christians across the continents who were hurt by the excesses and provocation of certain scenes. We hope they understand that the Olympic celebration extends far beyond the ideological biases of a few artists,” added the bishops.

The statement was co-signed by the “Holy Games”, a sports programme funded by the Catholic church.

Some conservative and far-right politicians in France have also expressed outrage over what they criticised as a “woke” parade, which featured LGBT+ performers and a racially diverse cast.

The four-hour ceremony took place under driving rain, with athletes sailing down a six-kilometre (four-mile) stretch of the river Seine on 85 boats.

Entertainers performed from river-side monuments, the banks and on bridges. “

To all Christians worldwide who watched the opening ceremony and felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France speaking, but a leftist minority prepared for any provocation,” far-right politician Marion Marechal wrote on X.

A spokesman for France’s far-right National Rally party, Julien Odoul called the ceremony “a ransacking of French culture.”

Arch-conservative Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban meanwhile railed against the “weakness and disintegration of the Western world” which he said was illustrated by the opening ceremony.

“Western values were considered for a long-time as universal but are seen as increasingly unacceptable and rejected by many countries in the world,” Orban said in Romania.

Show artistic director Thomas Jolly, who is gay, had pledged last week that the ceremony would celebrate “diversity” and “otherness.”

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, he said that his intention had not “been to be subversive or to shock.”

“Last night it was about our Republican values of benevolence and inclusion,” he told reporters.

“In France, you have the right to love as you like, who you like. In France, you can believe (in religion) or not believe. In France, we have lots of rights,” he added.

The Ororification of the protests, by Ugoji Egbujo

The youths plan a public protest. The land has been feverish with hunger and suffering.  The grounds for a protest can’t be more legitimate and compelling. The cost of living has become punishing.

The weak naira has pauperised everyone, and the poor have been left without hope. The new government arrived with the old cluelessness. Its mode is the boring Business As Usual.

The youths believe that besides pervasive ineptitude, the political class has been chronically aloof and wasteful. Rather than engage the youths, the political class has opted for scaremongering, delegitimisation and demonisation. The government is going for the kitchen sink.

The most troubling tactic is the equation of peaceful protest with violence. Some elders have been co-opted to warn the young not to partake in the protests because they have information that the planners of the protests want to burn the country. Even during the military regimes, students were allowed to protest. The military dictatorships, striving to be seen as humane, didn’t employ this disingenuous tactic.

If every government treated public protests as inevitably destructive then the citizens’ right to protest would have been effectively abolished long ago. It’s heart-wrenching to see politicians and former Rights activists who championed protests under the military say only ugly things about the right to protest. Their forgetfulness is painful. They are carefreely painting protesters as arsonists and vandals even before the protests have started.

It’s been a hard watch these last few days. Security agencies have been addressing press conferences to warn protesters. Those whose duty it is to protect protesters are announcing in advance that they are incapable of performing those duties. The situation is pathetic. At these press conferences, no effort is made to give the protesters the benefit of the doubt. Almost all the security agencies have exhibited a blanket disdain for protesters. Rather than engage in this shameful and self-humiliating scaremongering, the federal government should outlaw the right to protest. In North Korea, nobody can protest. That’s a more honest path. Politicians are always slippery. So seeing self-anointed progressives eulogise the right to protest in one breath and in the next send out messages that protests will destroy the country isn’t all that shocking.  But watching noblemen sink into barefaced lying to deny the youths a voice has been unbearable.

It hasn’t stopped at scaremongering. When the government isn’t gathering and persuading traditional and religious leaders to help it delegitimise protests, it’s allowing its officials to engage in naked bigotry and divisiveness. Not long ago, a special adviser to the president pointed accusing fingers at Peter Obi and his supporters. He had no evidence. All he sought was to drive a wedge between ethnic groups to have the protests truncated. The people paid with taxpayers’ funds to promote national unity have sunk into political skulduggery. This recourse to political agbeorism may not end with fishing for advance scapegoats. It has the potential to set up a conflagration between ethnic groups if the peaceful protests are hijacked and derailed by thugs, as is being speculated.

Before this government, opposition parties used to champion or promote public protests against bad governance at the centre. In 2012, President Tinubu and his comrades led pretests against the then President Jonathan, who had partially removed fuel subsidies. Then, it was the duty of the opposition, acting as an electable alternative, to use protests to keep the ruling government in check. Today,  protests are taboo. Even opposition leaders are forbidden by bigots in the boys’ quarters of power to engage in any protests.

Nothing has been spared in this attempt to stop the protests. Now, some local priests in Lagos have announced that they will be engaging in a spiritual cleansing called Oro for 15 days. In other words, they have casually outlawed any movements in the evenings for the ten-day period the planners of the protests plan to engage in peaceful protests. The Lagos State Govt has said it wasn’t consulted. Yet, it doesn’t intend to condemn or stop the Oro priests. The Constitution explicitly states that citizens have the right to reside wherever they like and to move freely. Such a constitutional right can only be curtailed by the government in pursuit of overriding public good. The idea that some priestesses or cults can wake up and declare a part of the state out of bounds to residents at certain times without the approval of the state government is ridiculous. To employ such arbitrariness to sabotage the right of free citizens to protest against bad governance is the final descent into anarchy.

These bad precedents being laid cheerfully may seem innocuous. But once they prove effective, they will be exploited on a larger scale to destroy our democracy. It’s noteworthy that Oro is making a second ignoble entrance. During last year’s elections, it was used to scare away and disenfranchise voters who were not indigenes of Ikorodu. This time, it appears it will be used to undermine the protests. Who knows what next this cleansing process might be used to corrode? If some local priests in every town in this country can wake up and prohibit the movement of people as long as they like in the name of one religion or the other, then we are in a mess.

Maintaining Prostate Health: Essential Tips for Men Over 70

As a 70-year-old in good health, it’s great that you’re proactive about maintaining your prostate health. Here are five key factors to consider for keeping your prostate in optimal condition:

  1. Maintain a Healthy Diet
Your diet plays a crucial role in prostate health. Consuming a diet high in unhealthy fats and processed foods can increase your risk of prostate issues. Instead, focus on eating nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats, which can support prostate health and overall well-being.
  2. Exercise Regularly
Regular physical activity not only helps manage weight but also positively impacts prostate health. Exercise can lower the risk of prostate cancer and enhance urinary function. Aim for consistent physical activity, whether it’s running, cycling, or another form of exercise you enjoy.
  3. Avoid a Sedentary Lifestyle
Prolonged periods of sitting can increase pressure on the prostate, leading to inflammation and other problems. Make it a habit to take breaks and move around, even if you have a desk job. Incorporating short walks or stretches into your day can be beneficial.
  4. Limit Smoking and Alcohol Consumption
Smoking and excessive alcohol intake can adversely affect prostate health. Research indicates that smokers are at a higher risk for aggressive prostate cancer, while heavy drinking can cause inflammation and enlargement of the prostate. Reducing or eliminating these habits can have a positive impact on your prostate health.
  5. Regular Check-ups are Crucial
Many men avoid visiting the doctor unless symptoms are severe, but regular check-ups are vital for early detection and prevention of prostate problems. Annual prostate exams and screenings are essential as you age, helping to catch any issues early and manage them effectively.

By paying attention to these factors, you can take proactive steps to support your prostate health and overall well-being.

Six Simple Ways to Incorporate Self-Care into Your Daily Routine

Self-care is essential for maintaining both physical and mental well-being. Incorporating small, consistent practices into your daily life can lead to significant improvements in how you feel. Here are six straightforward ways to practice self-care every day:

  1. Start Your Day with Meditation
Spend a few minutes each morning meditating to set a positive tone for the day. Focus on your breath, clear your mind, and let go of any stress or worries. This can enhance your mood and reduce overall stress.
  2. Stay Hydrated
Drinking enough water is fundamental to good health. Aim for at least eight glasses of water a day to stay energized, support bodily functions, and improve skin health.
  3. Take Regular Breaks
If you’re working, whether from home or in an office, take frequent breaks. Step away from your workspace, stretch, or take a brief walk. Regular breaks can prevent burnout, reduce eye strain, and increase productivity.
  4. Eat Nutritious Meals
Fuel your body with a variety of healthy foods. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your diet. A balanced diet can boost energy levels, enhance mood, and support overall health.
  5. Get Moving
Incorporate at least 30 minutes of physical activity into most days of the week. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or a gym workout, find an exercise you enjoy and make it a regular part of your routine.
  6. Unwind Before Bed
Establish a calming bedtime routine to improve sleep quality. Engage in relaxing activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or practicing gentle stretches. Avoid screens and bright lights at least an hour before bedtime to help you fall asleep more easily.
