Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee, charged with the responsibility of reviewing the impact of seasonal rainfall prediction (SRP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) on the nation’s food security from 2015-2018.

According to the minister, “the prediction which is very scientific and exact, are extremely important and beneficial to what we do, like how to plan cities and build in such a way that stands the weather condition, but the most important one is our ability to feed our self by knowing when to plant and harvest the type of crops at what particulars season”.

He said it is in recognition of the importance of the annual rainfall predictions that the Agency is being empowered and positioned for more accuracy.

“We are acquiring capability through NIMET to cascade and drop it down within meters and inches of accuracy, noting that in 2017 some farmers in Sokoto came to testify that from the prediction and the advice they have gotten that they were able to make good harvest for the season and unfortunately other who didn’t follow the advice had losses”.

Chairman of the committee and Director Planning Research and Statistics Mohammed Shehu pledged that the members will work assiduously and deliver as expected. He thanked the minister for the opportunity to serve for the committee whose assignment, according to him touches the life of the average Nigerian.

Boko Haram: Centre accuses Red Cross of peddling falsehood to discredit Nigerian authorities, local CSOs

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) has accused the International Committee on Red Cross (ICRC) of a deliberately peddling falsehood to undermine the efforts of the Nigerian military in the North-East.

The Centre believes the international humanitarian organisation is misrepresenting facts in a bid to mislead unsuspecting members of the general public.

This trails a recent report where the Red Cross alleged that nearly 22,000 Nigerians are missing in the North-East.

This figure, according to the ICRC, represented the highest number of missing persons registered in any country.

At a world press conference on Monday in Abuja, CESJET revealed that there is a campaign of calumny by the ICRC against the Military’s counter-insurgency operations in North-East Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of CESJET, Executive Director, Isaac Ikpa, said that there’s no element of truth in the piece, describing it as a propaganda to dampen the morale of the troops, especially at a time the military recorded massive gains in the fight against terrorism.

The Centre, therefore, advised Red Cross to desist from commenting on issues outside their operational purview and concentrate on providing humanitarian services that it is known for.

While urging Nigerians to always verify such reports, the Centre, however, called on the ICRC to tender an unreserved apology to the military authorities, as well as withdraw the statement credited to it.

Read full statement below:

I most warmly welcome you all to the World Press Conference put together by the Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency (CESJET) in the light of the recently misrepresentation of facts by the International Committee on Red Cross on the counter-insurgency operations of the Nigerian Military in North-East Nigeria where either by omission or commission erroneously stated that over 22,000 Nigerians have been declared missing in North-East Nigeria.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency, having been conversant with the counter-insurgency operations in North-East Nigeria, is alarmed by the fact the International Committee on Red Cross would condescend to the unenviable height of misrepresenting facts and attempting to mislead unsuspecting members of the general public.

The disposition of the ICRC is an affront to the efforts of various civil society organizations that have devoted time and resources in monitoring the counter-insurgency operations of the Nigerian Military in North-East Nigeria. It is as well an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians for such a false statement to be made public by the ICRC.

This is also cognisant of the fact that the parameters used in arriving at such postulation might either be defective or outdated, as there is no element of truth in the ICRC report on the number of missing persons in North-East Nigeria.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency see the recent move by the ICRC as covert terrorist propaganda aimed at damping the morale of the Nigerian troops in operation in North-East Nigeria.

It is also somewhat curious that this is coming on the heels when the Nigerian Military has made considerable gains in the fight against terrorism in North-East Nigeria that has seen the remnants of Boko Haram flee to the fringes of the Lake Chad Basin region.

It is also curious that the ICRC would feign ignorance to the fact that the Nigerian Military in operation in North-East Nigeria has been conducting search and rescue operations that have resulted in the rescue of thousands of women and children and reunited them with their families.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency wishes to highlight the fact that on November 17, 2019, Nigerian troops deployed in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State rescued women and children, as well as an older woman in her 80s from Boko Haram captivity.

On May 19, 2019, The Nigerian army rescued 54 women and children held captive by the extremist group Boko Haram. On June 24, 2019, over 120 women and children were rescued by the Nigerian military from Boko Haram captivity. On March 7, 2018, over 1000 women and children were rescued by the Nigerian military from Boko Haram captivity. On June 5, 2018, the Nigerian Military rescued 54 women been used as sex slaves by the Boko Haram terrorist. And the list goes on and is verifiable.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, believes that the report by the ICRC is intended for mischief purposes as there is no iota of truth in the claims made therein. It consequently behoves on all well-meaning Nigerians to disregard whatever postulations the ICRC has canvassed with regards to missing persons in North-East Nigeria, as well as a probe of military operations in North East.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency are worried about this trend that is capable of misleading unsuspecting members of the general public on the actual state of affairs in North-East Nigeria, as well as the efforts of the Nigerian Military in Search and Rescue operations.

The ICRC has, by their action, demonstrated that they are either not conversant with the happenings in North-East Nigeria, or they have so chosen to take the dishonourable path like others that do not want the war on terrorism in Nigeria to come to an end.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity, and Transparency, therefore, states that the report by the ICRC is highly condemnable and must be retracted for lack of objectivity and an outright attempt at smearing the image of the Nigerian Military in operations in North-East Nigeria.

The ICRC must, as a matter of urgency, desist from commenting on issues outside their operational purview and concentrate on providing humanitarian services that it is recognized for. The ICRC must not allow itself to be used by agents of Boko Haram terrorist groups to spread propaganda that would mislead unsuspecting members of the general public.

The Centre of Social Justice, Equity and Transparency as a result of this calls on the ICRC to tender an unreserved apology to the military authorities, as well as withdraw the statement credited to it.

The Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency wishes to advise the ICRC to always verify the information before going to press, else it might lose its credibility before the relevant authorities in Nigeria, as well as the Nigerian people.

#RevolutionNow: Group protest at AGF’s office, demands investigation of foreign associates

The last seems not to have been heard on the embattled publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore as a group of civil rights activists today in Abuja took to the street to demand the investigation of his foreign  counterparts in the RevolutionNow protest which authorities have claimed is targeted at destabilizing the country.

The protesters, led by the Congress for Defence of Democracy (CDF), ended their walk at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, calling for an urgent probe on the nefarious activities of Mr Sowore and his foreign collaborators.

In a petition signed by Convener, Stephen Okenarhe and submitted to the AGF, the CDF revealed that it would be a disservice to the unity of Nigeria should Mr Sowore be granted bail without identifying his foreign sponsors.

According to Okenarhe, the controversial human rights activist have proven to be acting a script by “enemies of Nigeria that are envious of the giant strides recorded in critical sectors of the economy in the past four years under President Muhammadu Buhari”.

Besides the ongoing seven-count charge trial, the group pointed out that Mr Sowore has secretly been receiving illicit funds from some foreign sources while also covertly running the propaganda wing of Boko Haram.

Okenarhe added that the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress even signed a pact with the proscribed Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and some disgruntled opposition politicians to destabilise the nation.

Mr Sowore, the group reckoned, could eventually jump bail and continue with his nefarious activities – just like Nnamdi Kanu.

The protesters, therefore, called on the AGF “ to use his good office to institute discrete investigation by the concerned authorities to track down and arrest those involved.

“The Attorney General of the Federation may wish to know that the charges brought against Omoyele Sowore are not a reflection of the enormity of the havoc he intended for the country with his planned Revolution Now,” the statement reads in part.

“ The Honourable Attorney General may wish to be informed that Omoyele Sowore has been secretly receiving illicit funds from some foreign sources since the build-up to the general elections for vote-buying. However, he mismanaged the funds, and the alternative was to stage a violent revolution to impress his paymasters.

“ This is on the heels that the Omoyele Sowore indeed planned to cause unrest in the country by receiving a massive amount of monies from questionable sources to procure arms and ammunitions.

“Omoyele Sowore is also known to be courting the members of the opposition party, and because he runs a popular internet news site (Saharareporters.com), he availed himself to members of the opposition to aid their destabilization plot after they lost the elections.

“Omoyele Sowore has been covertly running the propaganda wing of Boko Haram in conjunction with other intellectual asset of the terrorists group in Nigeria. This has seen his news outlet receiving and publishing information on troops’ movements, casualty figures in attacks that never took place or just before they take place etc. But to our greatest surprise, these were neither investigated by the DSS or featured in the charges against Sowore in court.

“Omoyele Sowore also planned to orchestrate mass outcry against the Federal Government of Nigeria in order to trigger wanton killings by members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) led by Nnamdi Kanu. We have it on good authority that he had a meeting with Nnamdi Kanu and these were discussed before his subsequent arrest by the DSS.

“Omoyele Sowore secretly entered a pact with sponsors of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) being Iran to cause unrest in the country in line with an earlier threat that Nigeria will pay for disallowing the lawless activities of the IMN. He has served as the conduit for the transfer of funds to the IMN through the accounts of SaharaReporters where the funds come in donations.

“ Omoyele Sowore in collaboration with the major losers of the 2019 are still nursing the intention of destroying our democratic ethos instead of waiting for the next general election to test their self acclaimed popularity through the ballot.

“ We wish to inform the Honourable Attorney General that with the avalanche of established cases against Omoyele Sowore, it would be indeed a great disservice to the unity of Nigeria should he be granted bail without identifying his sponsors, as well as those with whom Omoyele Sowore plotted with to destabilize the peace and unity of our country.

“ The Honourable Attorney General may also wish to know that as it stands, Omoyele Sowore poses a significant threat to peace and tranquillity in Nigeria, as credible information at public disposal indicates covert plans to organize protests across the country against the government in the name of freedom of expression or bogus claims to fighting for human rights at the detriment of national security.

“The case of Ibraheem El-Zarzarky is also worthy of mention where he plotted to be airlifted to Iran through a brief stop over in Dubai but was intercepted through the vigilante eyes of the security agencies.

“We are by this letter calling on the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation to use his good office to institute discrete investigation by the concerned authorities into the nefarious activities of Omoyele Sowore to track down and arrest those involved in the destabilization agenda.

“We are constrained to add that not until a proper investigation is carried out by the relevant security agencies, releasing Omoyele Sowore will endanger the lives of other citizens, particularly the youths, to carry out actions that will disintegrate the country.

“It is good to mention that the parallel government which Sowore intends to form is already reaching out to countries like Iran for recognition whereas people like Deji Adeyanju, Dayo Ariyo etc are being penciled as Ministers in that arrangement.”

2023: Northern governors using Heineken to penetrate Niger Delta, Nabena alleges

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Yekini Nabena has said that a governorship aspirant in Bayelsa state Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, is being used as a pawn by two northern governors of the ruling party to further their 2023 political aspirations.

The APC deputy spokesman who refused to name the northern APC governors, threatened to name and shame them if they refuse to follow the path of honour ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja, the Bayelsa-born APC chieftain revealed that the said governors are using Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, one of the APC governorship aspirants for Bayelsa state to cause disaffection in Bayelsa and the Niger Delta zone of the APC.

Lokpobiri, had approached the court to declare him, and not David Lyon (now Governor-elect), as the authentic candidate of the APC.

Nabena said, “It is common knowledge that Senator Heineken Lokpobiri has refused to congratulate and identify with the governor-elect of Bayelsa State, Chief David Lyon after his landslide election victory. Lokpobiri has refused to drop his misplaced and ill-advised legal action taken against the APC and David Lyon with the hope of acquiring the Bayelsa governoship mandate with the support of his sponsors.

“After the Bayesla governorship election, stakeholders have had several meetings where Lokpobiri’s sponsors were identified as two northern governors which I am not disposed to name for political reasons.

“Depending on the zoning arrangements adopted by the APC for the 2023 presidency, the governor’s are positioning themselves by scheming to control Bayelsa State through Lokpobiri and then use that as a springboard into other South South states.

“I will not dwell on the political power play among APC leaders of the South South for the soul of the region ahead of 2023. However, my strong advise for the governors is that they should focus on the development of their states and not meddle in the affairs of Bayelsa state and the South South.

“Bayelsa state and other oil-producing states of the South South enjoys a fragile peace as a result of the commendable efforts of the President Muhammadu Buhari government to develop the zone and productively engage the youth. We will not allow anybody to disrupt the peace of Bayelsa state in furtherance of their selfish political interests. President Buhari is a stickler for democratic principles and the rule of law, we all must follow these principles. Chief David Lyon emerged as the popular APC governorship candidate and went ahead to overwhelmingly win the Bayelsa Governorship election.

“It is Heineken Lokpobiri’s constitutional right to approach the court, even if his case has no merit. But I think it is important to let the world know that Heineken Lokpobiri’s actions are sponsored by outsiders in furtherance of their political interests ahead of 2023.”

Sowore: Beware of emergency activists acting as pro-democracy fighters, group warns

Following recent protests calling for the release of Sahara Reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore, the Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance (IDGG) has raised an alarm over the upsurge of misleading Pro-Democracy organisations purportedly defending human rights in the country.

The group gave this warning on Saturday in Abuja to address what it described as the “Upsurge of Private Enterprises as Pro-Democracy Fighters”.

Speaking on behalf of IDGG, Executive Director, Comrade Joseph Idoko described the trend as “worrisome” and “dangerous” for the entrenchment of democracy in the country.

The group reckoned this is the handiwork of politicians who are hell-bent on making the country ungovernable having lost relevance in the nation’s political space.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance, therefore, called on security agencies to begin the profiling of these “overnight groups to nip in the bud their nefarious activities”.

Read full statement below:

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance is compelled to call this press conference in light of the sudden upsurge of groups under various nomenclatures parading themselves as pro-democracy groups and fighting for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria.

This is indeed a worrisome trend given the fact that some persons and individuals have turned pro-democratic activities in a private enterprise where they can smile to the bank, not minding whose ox is gored.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance views the trend as dangerous for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria due to the tendency for disgruntled politicians to hijack the system and wreak havoc of unimaginable proportion.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance is also alarmed by the way and manner these supposed pro-democracy groups has carried on with such legitimately, even when it is glaring that the quest for monetary benefits buoys actions and activities.

The danger of this is that those interests against the progress of Nigeria can easily use these supposed pro-democracy groups to make the Country ungovernable in exchange for monetary gains.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance suspects that there is a likelihood that the emergence of these groups is the handiwork of politicians who have lost out in the present political arrangement in the Country and, as such, one of the ways to get their pound of flesh is to instigate crisis.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance wishes to use this medium to bring to the notice of the relevant authorities in Nigeria that the various groups parading themselves as pro-democracy groups are nothing but an outright fraud which is inimical to the national interest.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance consequently charge the various security agencies to, as a matter of urgency, begins the profiling of these “overnight” groups to nip in the bud their nefarious activities.

The overall implication of the activities of these groups is that they would avail themselves as willing tools to those that are bent on seeing to the disintegration of Nigeria.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance wishes to also bring to the notice of the generality of Nigerians that these groups are extremely against the interest of Nigeria. As such, they should view with a pinch of salt, any form of advocacy coming from them.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance believes that should the relevant authorities fail to act in good stead, Nigeria might be dealing with a more significant challenge in the nearest future.

The Initiative for Democracy and Good Governance as a result of this state in unequivocal terms that the unity and progress of Nigeria are sacrosanct and all those masquerading under various pro-democracy nomenclatures to enrich their pockets should desist from such private enterprises in the interest of national security.

El-Zakzakky: Group accuses IMN of violating human rights by using children for protests

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre (SHAC) has condemned in totality the indiscriminate use of children as a shield by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) to accomplish its violent protests across the country.

The group made this known in a press conference on Friday to express displeasure in IMN’s unwholesome violation of children’s rights in its violent campaign against constituted authorities.

In a statement signed by Executive Director, Joyce Ogwu, the Centre raised an alarm, calling for an end to such violations.

While acknowledging that the Islamic sect have the right to advocate for the release of their leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zarzaky, the SHAC reckoned that due process must be followed as there is an on-going court case .

The Centre, however, frowned at what it described as “enslavement of children in their various terrorist cells in the country”.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre, therefore, called on the relevant authorities to put an end to the barbaric practice.

Read full statement below:

I welcome you all to the all-important press conference put together by the Save Humanity Advocacy Centre to condemn in its totality the flagrant abuse of the rights of children by the obnoxious Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN).

The IMN as an organization has constituted itself into a parallel government in Nigeria through its violent campaigns and protest across the country for a cause that is before a competent court of law.

While it is understandable that they have a right to advocate for the release of their leader, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zarzaky from detention, they must also realize that there is an on-going court process that must be exhausted before such request could be granted so long he is not found guilty of the charges levelled against him.

The worrisome part of the activities of the IMN is the indiscriminate use of children as a shield in its violent protests across the country.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre frowns at such outright abuse of children by the leadership of the IMN and as a result of this, insists that such violations should be discontinued henceforth.

The IMN must also stop with immediate effect the continued enslavement of children in their various terrorist cells in the country. They must realize that keeping children in camps against their will and wish is a gross violation of their inalienable rights.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre wishes to use this medium to call of the relevant authorities to put an end to the barbaric practice by the IMN of using children as their foot soldiers in their violent campaigns.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre wishes to state that the IMN should be compelled to discontinue the outright servitude of children in their possession, mostly whom they have severed from their parents and families through unorthodox means.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria must be circumspect in the way and manner they put children in harm’s way in a bid to demand the release of their spiritual leader.

The leaders of the IMN must come to the realization that the activities of the IMN stand banned and also outlawed as a terrorist group by a competent court of jurisdiction in Nigeria until otherwise declared by a competent court of jurisdiction.

This much they are challenging in court, and it is expected that status-quo be maintained until the final determination of the suit by the court.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre wishes to advise the leadership of the IMN to desist from further heating the polity and subjecting hundreds of children to physical and psychological torture, which is unacceptable in any democratic society in the world over.

The leadership of the IMN must realize that they cannot take the laws into their hands by engaging in violent street protests across the country. They must come to the understanding that Nigeria is indeed not their fiefdom where they want everyone to either identify with their ideology or sink.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre believes that lawlessness, as exhibited by the members of the IMN, is an indication that should the court grant bail to its spiritual leader; Nigeria might go up in flames because of their evil and extremely violent tendencies.

The Save Humanity Advocacy Centre wishes to state in unequivocal terms that the time for IMN to stop its use of children in its violent campaign against the constituted authorities in Nigeria is now.

They must also respect court orders and understand that Nigeria is not a banana republic.

Understanding French NGO’S obsession with Nigeria’s war against terrorism

By Richard Murphy

As a first, Nigeria is not a banana republic where everything goes. There are laid down rules and regulations. There is a Constitution that also guides our actions and inactions, just like in the majority of the world where there is a democracy.
The piece by Bertrand Perrochet, the director of operations of Medecins sans Frontiers (Doctors without Borders) titled “Is Counter-Terrorism killing Humanitarian action in Nigeria,” portrays a picture of a deliberate attempt by the military authorities to deprive victims of the Boko Haram war in North-East Nigeria access to Medicare.
Could that be true? And if yes, what purpose would it serve? These are some of the questions that ran through my mind when I laid my hands on the article. However, after reading, I was genuinely disappointed that such contradictions and half-truths could emanate from the stable of such an organization that should know better about the great efforts that have gone into humanitarian efforts by the relevant authorities in Nigeria.
I can bet that Bertrand Perrochet was misled by his lieutenants supposedly on the ground in North-East Nigeria. And he acted erroneously too. Or just maybe he is acting out a script, with his French connection. Be that as it may, it is inexcusable for such half-truths to be peddled before the international community. This is my grouse with the write-up.
In counter-terrorism operations, the number one rule is restriction and access only for medical aids as when necessary. But again, such access could be denied when there is a propensity for harm to come the way of humanitarian workers. We are witnesses to instances where humanitarian workers are abducted and in some killed by belligerent members of terrorist groups. Nigeria has had its fair share of it. And this is in line with one of the pillars of the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy that stipulates “addressing the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism.
You would agree with me that unhindered access is a conducive condition to the spread of terrorism. Back to Bertrand, the military authorities had denied access to towns outside their control called “Garrison,” and there are many children in those enclaves in dire need of medical attention. As a first, that is not a statement of fact as it was not backed with any empirical evidence. I thought that before such postulations could be made, there ought to be in the least, first-hand information, and not assumptions. They ought to know better that people could see through such propaganda easily.
Secondly, the military authorities would not endanger the lives of humanitarian workers by granting access to areas not safe by all ramifications. Don’t forget that the lives of these humanitarian workers are as well important. For example, it is common knowledge that the remnants of Boko Haram fighters are littered around the fringes of the Lake Chad region. So would it make sense for the military authorities to grant access to Bertrand and his lieutenants? They would be probably be killed or abducted for ransom.
Ironically, this much he alluded to. But he again contradicted himself by stating that “doctors should not be forced to make judgments on who is a good patient or bad patient.” I am not sure there is any such classification in the theatre of operations. Maybe he is talking about rendering medical services to wounded terrorists, who, in his words, do not want to have any form of interaction with humanitarian workers. “We are faced with fragmented armed groups that don’t want to talk to us, have indiscriminately assaulted civilians, attacked health structures, and kidnapped and killed aid workers.”
If this is the case, there is a justification for some of the actions taken by the military authorities to preserve human life because it is only the living that can render humanitarian services.
I am of the candid opinion that Bertrand wanted a situation where his team would go into the trenches and render humanitarian services like Father Christmas. If that is what he is canvassing, I am afraid that is the height of ignorance. And he must also understand that in counter-terrorism operations, and concerning Nigeria, humanitarian services have been one of the foundations on which the counter-terrorism strategy was built.
There are no forms of discrimination, as he claimed. Maybe he is unaware of the various search and rescue operations carried out by the military authorities in the region. And the result has seen to the rescue of hundreds of women and children, mostly malnourished and in dire need of medical attention. These women and children are attended to by military medical personnel and subsequently taken to safety where access to robust medical services can be availed. And this is where Doctors without Borders and other humanitarian organizations come in.
Lest I forget, this is a war situation and not a medical outreach. These are two different things and Bertrand, and his lieutenants must realize that taking back the “steering wheel of the ambulance” is a process and not an event because the ambulance had been hijacked by terrorist groups when they took up arms and killed and maimed unarmed innocent women and children. And that is why the military authorities are bent on reclaiming the hijacked ambulance so that Doctors can reach women and children without hinder.
Counter-terrorism cannot kill humanitarian action in Nigeria even though there have been established cases of international humanitarian organizations, mostly of French origin, providing covet logistic support to Boko Haram terrorists in North-East Nigeria. Bertrand and his lieutenants must understand the true meaning of humanitarianism in the context of a war situation. It is not a cinema where Doctors without Borders would be seen manoeuvring dangerous terrains in return for a standing ovation.
Tremendous successes are being recorded daily, and no amount of blackmail can deter the fighting troops. Like I said earlier, Nigeria is not a banana republic. There are laid down rules and regulations. And this French obsession with Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts must stop.

European group endorses Sowore’s prosecution

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe (ANPE) believes the prosecution of Sahara Reporters founder, Omoyele Sowore, will save the country’s democracy.

The umbrella group of Nigerian professionals in Europe made this known on Thursday after an emergency meeting in Brussels, Belgium to deliberate on the state of affairs in Nigeria.

In a communique jointly signed by President, Dr. Agwu Onyeke and 13 others, the professionals urged the Federal Government to bring Sowore and his cohorts sponsored by foreign mercenaries to destabilize Nigeria to book.

The group frowned at Sowore’s call for revolution – an indication that the controversial human rights activist was working hand-in-hand with some external forces.

ANPE, therefore, expressed solidarity with the FG on his on-going trial for instigating violence aimed at truncating democracy.

The group further recommended the process of profiling all Sowore’s accomplices in Nigeria and beyond the shores – bringing them to justice with the assistance of the International Criminal Court and the Interpol.

Read full communique below:

A communique by the Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe issued after an emergency general meeting which held at Crowne Plaza Brussels – Le Palace in Brussels to deliberate on the state of affairs in Nigeria, chiefly on the growing spate of externally influenced plot to destabilize Nigeria on Thursday, 27th November 2019.

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe, the umbrella organization of Nigerian Professionals in various walks of life in Europe, converged an emergency general assembly to discuss the threats posed to the unity of Nigeria from external sources. The emergency general assembly discussed extensively the various issues confronting the Nigerian nation

The meeting was well attended, and it touched on sensitive issues in Nigeria as well as recommendations for the relevant authorities in Nigeria. At the end of the meeting, the following resolutions were reached:

The Issues:

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe views with high suspicion the motives behind the call for a revolution in Nigeria by Omoyele Sowore and his co-conspirators.

That the call is at best an indication that Omoyele Sowore was working hand-in-hand with some external forces bent on destabilizing Nigeria through their nefarious ways.

That the unity of Nigeria has been gravely affected by the actions of Omoyele Sowore and his cohorts, bent on seeing to the disintegration of Nigeria

That the sponsors of Omoyele Sowore are instigating the on-going protests across the world by individuals and organizations using pro-democratic pseudo names in an attempt to blackmail the government of Nigeria into submission.

That Omoyele Sowore indeed provided himself as that willing clog in the wheels of progress in Nigeria

The Association of Nigerian Professionals in Europe also frowns at the campaign of calumny against the government of Nigeria and wishes to state that the campaign is in poor taste aimed at causing disaffection in the polity so they can ultimately rubbish the gains Nigeria has made since 2015 under the present dispensation.

It is highly advised that those individuals and organizations should channel their energies and resources into noble causes for the benefit of humanity.

THE ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN PROFESSIONALS IN EUROPE CONSEQUENTLY MAKES THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTIONS:

That it supports wholeheartedly the on-going trial of Omoyele Sowore by the Nigerian authorities for instigating violence aimed at truncating democracy in Nigeria.

That the relevant authorities in Nigeria should not relent in its fight against enemies of the country who are engaged in these nefarious acts.

That the relevant authorities in Nigeria should, as a matter of urgency, begin the process of profiling all the accomplices of Omoyele Sowore in Nigeria and beyond the shores of Nigeria, and bringing them to justice with the assistance of the International Criminal Court and the Interpol.

That the call for a revolution is a part of a bigger plot towards ensuring that Nigeria is made ungovernable and uninhabitable.

That the Nigerian authorities must also, as a matter of urgency, begin a detailed investigation into how these illicit funds are brought into the country.

That anyone found guilty no matter how highly placed should be made to face the full arms of the law in line with international conventions on crimes against humanity.

That should the Nigerian authorities fail to act decisively, the agents of destabilization would achieve their ultimate desire of disintegrating Nigeria.

Emergency Activists and the Soul of Nigeria

By Babatunde Ajayi

Foreign powers have sustained diabolic political and economic hold on African nations, even with the flag independence the 54 countries on the continent savour, or granted since the early 50s and 60s. Of late, Nigeria, with its status as the most populous and richly endowed black nation on earth has come under immense pressures of plots by the external destabilizing forces.

And because of the slavish submit of Africa leaders to the dictates of Western powers, exploiting the political cum economic resources of African nations, it has been pretty easy. Western powers set us against ourselves; they set the stage for us to bitterly scramble for the political power under a concept of democracy defined in their own terms, to the extent of inducing internal conflicts, crisis and violence, which tend to consume us.

A varsity don and anti-corruption evangelist, Prof. PLO Lumumba has been traversing Africa, trenchantly reawakening our consciousness to this reality and the imperative to carve a trajectory for a new dawn on the African continent. But often times, Western powers use some African leaders as repellants and instruments of attacks and embarrassments to Prof. Lumumba for a raising a voice.

But Lumumba has remained undeterred. We cannot be fooled anymore that African leadership is not doing enough yet, towards a genuine or total political and economic liberation of Africa from the stranglehold of the West. African leaders and some of its conspiratorial and unconscionable elites still posture as vessels in the hands of foreign powers.

I was again reminded pungently, in a glittering anniversary article on Berlin conference of 1884, just yesterday, by Patrick Gathara. It was titled, “Berlin 1884: Remembering the conference that divided Africa,” published online by Aljazeera, November 15, 2019.

The author meticulously recounted the issues parceled by the partition of African colonies on November 15, 1884 by European powers. The rules for partitioning of Africa were set and endorsed at an international conference presided over by the German Chancellor, Auto Von Bismarck at his official residence on Wilhelmstrasse in Berlin.

Gathara disclosed that the 104 days Berlin conference had all European representatives, with the exception of America, Switzerland and the Ottoman Empire. But Africa whose soul and future were to be decided was deliberately not invited to the conference and had no single representative.

“It was no accident that there were no Africans at the table-their opinions were not considered necessary,” says Gathara, for a conference Bismarck declared to delegates in his opening remarks as convoked “to discuss matters of sovereignty either of African states or of the European powers in African.”

Like Lumumba has always asserted everywhere, we have sadly donated our economic power to Western interests to date. However, what has remained a profound dream of foreign interests is to recapture through the backdoor, the political power they rashly conceded to Africans, perhaps, too early in their estimation. So, several tricks are employed to create an unstable political climate to remote-control African nations.

It is unfortunate to say, we have lived under this yoke and bug imposed on us by Western powers for almost a century. And we seem unprepared to free ourselves from this entanglement. There is a long history of externally-induced rebellions or revolts against our people in Africa.

Let me say, in Nigeria, there is a consistent pattern used by external forces to cause disaffection, disunity and instigate violence that could precipitate a possible break-up of the country. Predictions of Nigeria’s disintegration have failed in the past. But I sensed the undertakers have not let it go. They are more emboldened now, as more internal conspirators are recruited into the fold.

Today, we are confronted with the furore over the lawful detention of the #RevolutionNowProtests convener, Mr. Omoyele Sowore and his co-accused, Olawale Bakare over charges of treasonable felony and allied count allegations. He is in lawful detention in the facility of the Department of State Security Service (DSS). Justice Ijuoma Ojukwu has granted Sowore and his comrade in arms bail.

But instead of approaching the bail diligently by meeting the conditions as stipulated by the court or complying with the operational procedures of the DSS for Sowore’s release, we are playing to the gallery, as usual with impunity because there is a leader to blame.

Even Sowore’s lead counsel, a famous human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana has surprisingly enlisted into the clan of confusionists and rouble rousers over Sowore’s release. His actions hints me that he is more interested in currying public sympathy and support to portray the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari, as unjustly holding Sowore, a pro-democracy activist and presidential candidate in Nigeria’s 2019 general elections.

Quite unfortunately, some Nigerians, including intellectuals are brainwashed into believing their schemes. For instance, a few days ago, a group of 11 Nigerian academics, lawyers and journalists in diaspora, led by Ebenezer Obadare of University of Kansas, USA issued a joint public statement calling for the release of Sowore and Bakare and blaming Buhari for his woes.

The statement partly said, “The continued detention of both human rights advocates is an egregious injustice and a travesty of the rule of law.” Even the somewhat dubious rejigging of the motive by these intellectuals from the illegal clamour for a revolution or dethronement of a legitimate democratic government as advocated by Sowore and other accusers to a human rights agenda bespeaks of our dilemma.

We must recognize that Sowore is a mere addition to the flock of externally influenced conspirators, very determined to push the country into extinct. Before him, there was Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu assembled all manner of criminals and hoodlums in the Southeast; armed them to hold the entire region hostage in molestations, intimidations, harassments, torture and extra-judicial killings of Nigerians, who denounced their violent ideology of secession. Kanu is allegedly backed by external forces and when he was arrested to account for his enterprise in a lawful court, he secured a bail, violated all conditions of the bail and finally jetted abroad where he is taking protective refuge.

But we all know how a genuine aspiration for self-determination is anchored, as against the aberrational brand served us by Kanu and his gangsters, who illegally declared a republic within the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

There is yet another potent agent of Nigeria’s destabilization, with external sponsorship. The leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) or simply, the Shiites in Nigeria, Sheik Ibraheem El-Zakzaky has been a torn in the flesh of Northern Nigeria. The sect members freely instigate unprovoked violence and killings, all too frequently to overlook by any government.

With incensed members, always armed with guns and other dangerous weapons in the guise of religious worship, the Shiites impudently committed killings of Nigerians and security agents, flouted laws of the land with impunity. El-Zakzaky has been arrested and undergoing trial on various charges.

But as characteristic of some Nigerians, we are inexplicably crucifying the Buhari Presidency for “illegal” detention of El-Zakzaky, even after the IMN publicly pledged allegiance to the Republic of Iran, a terrorists nation in the Middle East. Like IPOB’s Kanu, we cannot deny the very dubious attempts by El-Zakzaky to escape justice in Nigeria into the warm embrace of his sponsors in Iran and elsewhere, when he feigned ill-health and was granted bail for treatment abroad. So, while Nnamd Kanu brands his own as secession; El-Zakzaky hides under an Islamic movement.

Lest we forget, Nigeria is not the only African country under this spell or targeted for dismemberment by external forces. And the target is on African nations with enormous naturally endowed wealth and where there is bright prospect for prosperity.

There is the Somalian case of a war raging over 20 years. But let’s ask ourselves where is democracy in the oil-rich Libya now, after external forces influenced and instigated a masses popular revolt, exploiting the platform of the February 2011 Arab spring? It led to the ouster and death of Libyan strongman, Col. Maummar Gadaffi.

Of course, like former Zimbwawe’s leader, Robert Mugabe, we are conversant with Gadaffi’s hardline postures over policies and actions of powerful Western nations. Both vehemently challenged these obnoxious and discriminatory policies even in the General Assembly of United Nations (UN). It’s not a hidden fact.

The former Libyan dictator was ousted seven months into the Arab spring and killed by opposition rebels; “with the help of the larger international community,” writes Babjee Pothuraju. It’s something, which has stabbed me in the heart and has continued to occupy my psyche over a long time.

Libya was officially declared liberated on October 23 by a provisional government, tagged National Transition Council (NTC) led by Abdel Rahim el-Keeb as interim Prime Minister.

Because Gadaffi was a military dictator, the rebellious militias external forces inspired and armed against his government were simply known as “Libyan Rebel forces.” The dummy sold to these rebels was that Libya needed democracy and they must oust the dictator Gadaffi.

So, the rebel forces also recruited a handful of compatriots, convinced about fighting for democracy and with mouth-watering sums in foreign sponsorship, the rebels trudged on and on, until Gadaffi was dethroned and killed in his local village of Sirte. But where is Libya today and where is the democracy in that North African country?

Indeed, Pothuraju wrote in 2016 that whatever pretenses to democracy which was sold to Libyans never worked after the ouster of Gadaffi. The foreign sponsorship of rebels also ceased. In its place, violence among rebel groups, tribal and regional warriors took center stage and ensured Libya remains perpetually destabilized and possibly break-up.

Pothuraju tacitly warned Africa; “Libya is divided on regional, factional, and tribal lines, with members of each faction supporting their respective leaders. However, there is no coordination among these political factions and movements, which is very essential given the multi-dimensional aspects of the transition. It has resulted in the sidelining of pressing issues that otherwise might have been appreciated by the public. For example, Libya’s civil war hugely disrupted the economic activity by reducing oil output, which is the primary source of revenue.”

It’s the same trick these foreign forces are applying on Nigeria today. The likes of Sowore, Kanu, El-Zakzaky and hordes of other accomplices have been allegedly recruited to spearhead the struggle for Nigeria’s break-up, through carefully instigated internal crisis. So, lawyers, academics and journalists have keyed into this agenda too, relentlessly pulling the strings. The invisible drummer is elsewhere beating the drums, but those dancing on the stage knows the source of the rhythms.

The DSS has made a simple request in conformity with their operational etiquettes. It unambiguously said, those who signed for Sowore’s bail bond, should also appreciate the office to take him on bail. Why is compliance so difficult? Falana has been threatening since the last eight working days to institute contempt charge on the DSS. But he has not done so. He rather prefers to unofficially engage the DSS-DG on phone calls.

Why? Because as senior lawyer, he knows the procedures of release of any detainee arrested by the state and granted bail by courts. Yet, he is not prepared to follow due process, but in its stead, he follows the herds instincts of those who mobilized and invaded DSS office to forcefully “take away” Sowore. Who would be held responsible if Sowore fails to appear in court on the scheduled date? Like in the case of Kanu, they would be the same characters claiming President Buhari has killed and buried Sowore in DSS detention facility.

I align absolutely with the response of Ms. Lauretta Onochie, Special aide to President Buhari on social media, after she gave a thumps up to DSS boss, Mr. Yusuf Bichi for refusing to pick Falana’s calls.

She tweeted last Friday In a tweet in Friday, “Good job DG Bichi. DSS means Department of State Services NOT Department of Sowore Services. The demands of the DSS are unambiguous, clear and straightforward. Tell the Sureties to go and sign him out.” Nigerian compatriots, is this too difficult an assignment to accomplish?

I stand with her position completely. Anyone under the fake illusion that the ongoing trial of Sowore is between the Buhari administration and the self-acclaimed activist, which are dozens on the streets of Nigeria, must have his head re-examined for mental disorder.

We cannot flinch on this fight between the truth that we must know and the external forces after the soul of Nigeria. I mean those forces who want to disintegrate the country at all cost, using our own compatriots. We don’t want the Libyan experience, so the DSS must stand firm to resist this nonsense!

The manner we appreciate national security threats, obviously backed by foreign forces, very soon, we shall rally support for Boko Haram factional leader, Abubakar Shekau, if he is given a second chance. Shekau would call his own plot by a moniker that will hide the real motive from the rest of us.

Shekau would probably call his own version as “North East emancipation Agenda.” So, expectedly, lawyers, academics, journalists and so forth will stand to defend him so boldly, citing laws, they also flout.

Meanwhile I have never read a Nigerian journalist who has undertaken and published a detailed report on Shekau’s cord with terror groups in Iran and the Middle East. It will be a breaking story on any tabloid.

In essence, whatever name the internal agents hired for the break-up of Nigeria, decide to adopt, whether in English or any vernacular as may be handed to them by their paymasters, all we know is that they will never and should not be allowed to break up Nigeria. It is my message to them now.

Sowore is by every nuance, an inconsequential detainee to President Buhari as a person. Each one of us must be vigilante now because I suspect many more Sowores will still bounce on the stage. No foreign force should use the cloak of street activism to veil and blur our eyes. Nigeria must remain united and continue to move forward in the #NextLevel under President Buhari #.

Nigeria Deposits Aviation Law Instruments Of Ratification With ICAO

Minister of Aviation, Sen. Hadi Sirika has on Wednesday on behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, deposited the ratification on ‘Protocol to Amend the Convention on Offences and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO at the United Nation agency’s headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

This feat is in line with Nigeria’s efforts to support air laws against unruly behavior on board aircraft. Recall that that was agreed at Montreal on 4 April 2014’ also known as “The Montreal Protocol 2014.”

While depositing the Montreal Protocol 2014 Sen. Sirika said: “This is historic for Nigeria having been the Twenty-second state to deposit the ratification and give strength to the implementation which will come into effect from 1 January 2020. It is President Muhammadu Buhari’s desire that this law come into effect because it will mitigate against unlawful interference on board aircraft.”

“Nigeria will continue to support any law that will make air transport even safer. And this is one of them.”

Dr. Fang Liu, the Secretary General of ICAO while accepting the document attested to the fact that ICAO needs 22 countries to ratify this protocol for it to become effected and Nigeria is the 22nd state to have completed the process hence, it will come into effect from 2 January 2020

“I am delighted to announce that with this deposit, the Montreal Protocol 2014 will enter into force on 1 January 2020. I wish to commend Nigeria for being the twenty-second state to have completed the ratification process of this instrument,” Dr. Liu said.

“The Montreal Protocol 2014 amends the convention on Offences and Certain Other Acts Committed on Board Aircraft, done at Tokyo on 14 September 1963 (Tokyo Convention, 1963). The Protocol addresses the issue of rising incidents of unruly and disruptive behavior on board aircraft by significantly improving the ability of states to expand jurisdiction over relevant offences and acts to the operator. The Protocol will also serve to enhance global aviation security provisions by expressly extending legal recognition and protections to n-flight security officers.”

According to a statement by the Director Public Affairs, Ministry of Aviation, James Odaudu, apart from the Montreal Protocol 2014, Nigeria deposited ratification of the “Protocol Relating to an Amendment to the Convention on International Civil Aviation [Article 50(a)], signed at Montreal on 6 October 2016”, which is the proposal to increase Council member states from the current Thirty-Six (36) to Forty (40).

Also deposited was the “Protocol Relating to an Amendment to the Convention on International Civil Aviation [Article 56], signed at Montreal on 6 October 2016”, which is the increase of Air Navigation Commission (ANC) membership from 19 to 21.
