Tragedy unfolded at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), Ebonyi State, as Ogboji David Chukwuebuka, a 200-level student, tragically passed away after collapsing during a football match on campus.
According to reports by DAILY POST, the incident occurred during a football competition organized by the Directorate of Sports of the Student Union Government (SUG). Ogboji, a student of the Department of Economics, was participating in a match against the Faculty of Biological Science as part of the university’s freshers’ league tournament.
Ogboji, affectionately known as Bernardo, collapsed on the pitch during the game and was promptly rushed to the university clinic. Despite efforts to save him, he was transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Nwankwo Polycarp Chigozie, the SUG Director of Sports, confirmed the heartbreaking event in a statement, extending sincere condolences to Ogboji’s family, friends, and fellow students. He described the incident as a tragic loss and prayed for the peaceful repose of Ogboji’s soul.
