The media office of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of conducting a “hatchet job” against the ex-governor for undisclosed personal and political reasons.

In a statement signed by Ohiare Michael, the office criticized recent actions and statements by the EFCC, labeling them biased and politically motivated rather than part of a genuine anti-corruption campaign. The statement described the agency’s actions as an “embarrassment” to itself, citing contradictions in its handling of Bello’s case.

The EFCC had declared Bello wanted but allowed him to leave after he voluntarily appeared at their premises. Bello’s media office questioned why the EFCC did not detain him if they were truly interested in prosecution, hinting at ulterior motives behind the agency’s actions.

The statement called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to investigate the ongoing conflict between Bello and the EFCC, emphasizing that the anti-corruption fight must be fair and non-selective.

SSANIP Urges Tinubu to Implement Minimum Wage to Prevent Workers from Falling into Poverty

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) has raised concerns over the delayed implementation of the new minimum wage, signed into law two months ago by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The association warned that the delay is pushing Nigerian workers into severe financial hardship.

In a communiqué issued after its 73rd General Executive Council meeting in Abuja, SSANIP leaders, Comrade Philip A. Ogunsipe and Comrade Nura Shehu Gaya, called on the federal government to expedite the implementation process, stressing that current wages are insufficient to meet basic living needs.

SSANIP also urged the government to pay the arrears of the wage award dating back to March 2024. Additionally, the association expressed frustration over the National Board for Technical Education’s (NBTE) delay in forming a committee to address concerns within the polytechnic system.

The communiqué further criticized the disregard for appointment guidelines in state polytechnics and urged the NBTE to address the issue. The association also called out the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for overstepping its boundaries, particularly in matters affecting ND and HND admissions, and expressed concerns over rising fuel prices, which have deepened economic challenges for Nigerians.

For the second consecutive year, Nigeria’s Independence Day will be marked with low-key celebrations due to the nation’s economic challenges. Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, announced that the 64th Independence anniversary on October 1 will reflect the nation’s current economic realities.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government, Akume said, is sympathetic to the hardships Nigerians are facing, especially following recent economic reforms like the removal of fuel subsidies. The decision to downscale the celebrations is in alignment with the national mood.

Senator Akume highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to alleviate economic challenges, including the implementation of the Presidential CNG Initiative (Pi-CNG) to reduce transportation costs and support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to boost the economy.

Israel Rejects 21-Day Ceasefire Proposal Amid Intensifying Conflict with Hezbollah

Israel has rejected calls from its allies for a 21-day ceasefire with Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, vowing to continue its military campaign “until victory.” The refusal came just ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s anticipated address at the UN General Assembly on Friday.

The proposed ceasefire, pushed by the United States, France, and other allies, was introduced following discussions between U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron at the UN. However, Netanyahu rejected the offer, instructing the Israeli military to proceed with full force against Hezbollah strongholds in Lebanon.

Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah-controlled areas have resulted in the deaths of hundreds, with Hezbollah retaliating through rocket barrages. Meanwhile, Lebanon’s health ministry reported that over 700 people have been killed in Israeli strikes since Monday, with a total death toll exceeding 1,500 since the conflict escalated last October.

AHOUN Halts 2025 Hajj Registrations Over Unresolved Refund Issues with NAHCON

The Association for Hajj and Umrah Operators of Nigeria (AHOUN) has suspended all registration activities for the 2025 Hajj, citing unresolved financial disputes with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON). The suspension comes as a result of NAHCON’s failure to return caution deposits accumulated over several years.

In a statement by AHOUN President, AbdulLateef Yusuff Ekundayo, the group announced that its National Executive Council (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) have collectively agreed to halt preparations for the 2025 Hajj until their demands, specifically the outstanding refunds, are addressed.

AHOUN also advised its members not to submit or process Hajj 2025 forms, urging those who had already done so to report their details to zonal vice presidents.

NAHCON responded by clarifying that the caution deposit is intended to compensate pilgrims in cases of service failure by tour operators, and that the refund process is ongoing. The commission reported that 139 of the 241 tour operators for 2023 had received their refunds, with 70 opting to roll over their deposits for 2024. However, only 26 companies have applied for the 2024 refund, and further disbursements have been delayed due to administrative changes at NAHCON.

Eight young Nigerian girls who were trafficked to Ghana have been rescued and returned to Nigeria, bringing the total number of rescued victims to 113. The girls, aged 15 to 22, were lured to Ghana with false promises of employment but were forced into sexual exploitation. They have been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for safe accommodation and reintegration with their families.

Dabiri-Erewa also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghanaian authorities and other key figures, including Chief Callistus Elozieuwa of Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Ghana, for their cooperation in rescuing the victims. A Nigerian trafficker, Ms. Favour Ugwu, was jailed for eight years in Ghana for her involvement in human trafficking.
