Police in Enugu have arrested Dr. Emmanuel Ugwumba for alleged involvement in child trafficking and forgery in Udenu Local Government Area. The arrest was confirmed by the Enugu State Police Command’s spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Wednesday.

Ugwumba, who was apprehended by the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad on September 28, is accused of being part of a child trafficking network. His arrest followed an investigation into a public notice he issued regarding an abandoned child, which was falsely endorsed by the Enugu State Ministry of Gender and Social Development.

Further investigation revealed that Ugwumba, who claims to be a medical doctor, has been involved in child trafficking since 2017, in collaboration with a ministry employee and others who are still at large. The police also rescued a pregnant woman, a four-year-old child, and a two-year-old child during the operation.

Ugwumba is the owner of Chima Hospital and Maternity in Ugbaike, Enugu-Ezike, where he allegedly conducted illegal deliveries of seven untraceable children. Authorities also discovered various forged documents from the Ministry of Gender Affairs and unverified certificates from the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources.

Investigations are ongoing, and more details will be provided as the case unfolds.
