The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have announced a conditional suspension of their nationwide strike over unpaid salaries. The unions stated that members are expected to resume work on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

In a joint statement, NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU National President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim explained that the strike, which began on October 28, 2024, aimed to address salary delays due to what they called “government insensitivity.”

Following discussions with government officials, including the Ministers of Education and Finance, the unions secured a commitment from the government to release two of the four months’ withheld salaries. The first month has been largely paid, and the second month is expected by the end of November 2024.

The unions will monitor progress over the next month, while additional demands for outstanding allowances and wage awards remain under negotiation. Branch leaders are directed to inform members of the updates in campus meetings on Monday, November 4, ahead of resuming work.
