Effective Strategies to Overcome Financial Pressure

PERSONAL FINANCE
LAGOS – With the cost of commodities skyrocketing daily due to persistent inflation, survival has become a colossal task for people of all social classes. The situation is dire, affecting even the affluent, who are finding it challenging to sustain their lifestyles and businesses.

The depreciating value of the Naira, especially compared to foreign currencies like the dollar, pound, and euro, has further worsened the purchasing power of the masses. This economic strain has led to widespread financial pressure, particularly for those who have lost their means of livelihood or whose earnings can barely sustain them.

The persistent rise in commodity prices has created significant concern and financial strain for everyone. Overcoming this financial pressure requires discipline, prudence, and determination. One effective way to alleviate financial stress is by increasing your earnings.

Financial stress is inevitable, regardless of one’s status, as various factors like job loss, poor salary, debts from poor financial planning, and dwindling businesses can contribute. Addressing financial mistakes and setting realistic financial goals are essential steps in overcoming these challenges.

To defeat financial stress, it’s crucial to identify its root cause and understand that acquiring more money isn’t the solution. Instead, one’s perception of money is what truly matters. Here are some strategies to help overcome financial pressure:

Discuss It or Speak Out
One effective way to alleviate financial anxiety is to discuss it openly. Many people keep their financial burdens to themselves for fear of ridicule. However, addressing the issue directly and discussing it with a spouse or partner can significantly ease the burden.

Avoid Living a False Lifestyle
Financial pressure often arises when your lifestyle doesn’t match your income. Living beyond your means is deceptive and harmful. Recognizing the problem and creating a budget can help you track your spending and prioritize essential expenses.

Keep Track of Your Expenses
Evaluate your budget to keep track of your expenses and earnings. Proper budget evaluation allows you to identify areas where expenses can be reduced. Even if you’re broke, having a budget is essential as it guides your spending choices and helps you see where your money goes.

Enhance Your Earnings
Financial pressure may indicate the need to change your career, job, or find additional sources of income. There are many ways to work from home and increase your earnings.

Settle Your Debt
Debt is a significant source of financial stress. Whether due to overspending or unexpected challenges, it’s crucial to settle your debts. Creating a plan to pay off debt can significantly reduce financial stress.

Outline Your Personal Priorities
Clearly define your personal priorities to help you make better financial decisions. Having non-negotiable priorities can simplify tough financial choices and guide your spending.

Have Faith in Your Power
Believe that you can solve your financial problems. Many people have overcome worse financial situations. Maintaining hope and control over your finances can prevent depression and rekindle your motivation.

Make Small Positive Changes
Addressing financial stress involves increasing income or reducing expenses. Instead of making drastic changes, start with smaller, manageable steps to improve your financial situation gradually.

Maintain a Positive Mindset
Your mindset plays a significant role in overcoming financial stress. Manage your emotions and avoid negative thoughts. Believe in your ability to solve financial problems and set achievable goals.

Seek Professional Help
If your financial situation is complex and overwhelming, seeking professional help can provide guidance and instill confidence. Consulting a financial advisor doesn’t make you weak; it shows that you’re proactive and smart.

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively overcome financial pressure and improve your financial well-being.

MTN Group Announces Leadership Changes in Nigeria and Congo-Brazzaville

MTN Group has appointed Mohammed Rufai as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Congo-Brazzaville and Ayham Moussa as Chief Operations Officer (COO) of MTN Nigeria, effective September 1 and August 19, 2024, respectively.

The telecom giant also announced the voluntary early retirement of MTN Côte d’Ivoire CEO Djibril Ouattara and the departure of MTN Nigeria COO Hassan Jabber.

Mohammed Rufai, an accomplished professional with over 24 years of experience in ICT, has an impressive track record in the telecoms industry. He joined MTN Nigeria in 2002 and later moved to MTN Ghana, where he became Chief Technical Officer in 2015. Currently, he serves as the Chief Technical Officer at MTN Nigeria and holds senior roles across the MTN Group, including Regional CTIO for Southeast Africa and Ghana. Rufai also serves on the Board of Directors of Bayobab (Nigeria) and MTN Benin.

A driven leader, Mohammed is passionate about execution excellence, people development, and customer experience. He holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Computer Science and certifications in Advanced Management and General Management. He is an alumnus of Lagos Business School, Cranfield University, and the University of Cambridge.

Mohammed takes over from Ayham Moussa at MTN Congo-Brazzaville, who will join the MTN Nigeria executive leadership team as COO, replacing Hassan Jabber. Ayham first joined MTN in 2002, returned in 2006 after a brief hiatus, and has since served the organisation in various markets, including Syria and Guinea-Conakry. He has held senior roles such as Chief Information Officer, Chief Technical and Information Officer, and CEO of MTN Congo-Brazzaville.

In his technology roles, Ayham played a key role in Congo-Brazzaville’s digital evolution from 2G to 4G, establishing MTN Congo-Brazzaville as a technology leader. His team’s efforts were recognised with awards for the best network in West and Central Africa and the MTN Group. As CEO, Ayham expanded MTN Congo’s leadership and business health, accelerating growth, margins, and operational excellence while fostering strong relationships with various local stakeholders.

MTN Group President and CEO Ralph Mupita extended his thanks to Djibril Ouattara for his contribution over nearly nine years at MTN, saying he had been instrumental in building the business in Congo-Brazzaville and leading the turnaround of MTN Côte d’Ivoire. He also thanked Hassan Jabber for his immense contribution to the success of the Group over 22 years, where his roles included CEO in markets such as Sudan, Guinea-Conakry, and Afghanistan.

“On behalf of the MTN Group Board and Group Exco, I wish both Djibril and Hassan well in their future endeavours. I also congratulate Ayham and Mohammed on their appointments and wish them success in their new roles,” Mupita said.

OAAN Refutes Claims of Opposition to Chartered Body for Out-of-Home Media Bill

The Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN) has denied a publication by certain media outlets that linked the association with a statement from the Heads of Advertising Sectoral Group (HASG) opposing the proposed Chartered Body for Out-of-Home Media Bill.

According to OAAN, the statement incorrectly claimed that the group opposes the bill currently under consideration in the National Assembly, which seeks to establish a chartered body for the Out-of-Home Media practice in Nigeria.

In a disclaimer issued on Friday and signed by its president, Mr. Sola Akinsiku, OAAN clarified that its leadership was not consulted before the HASG issued the statement.

The Association emphasized its support for the bill, which has passed its second reading in the National Assembly. OAAN believes that the bill will enhance the profession, bringing greater professionalism and order to the Out-of-Home Media ecosystem.

“For the avoidance of doubt, our Association has unequivocally and unambiguously expressed our support for the bill as proposed by the most distinguished Senator Abaribe Eyinnaya because we are convinced that the anticipated charter will promote sanity, excellence, and professionalism in the Out-of-Home media ecosystem,” Akinsiku stated.

OAAN also argued that the charter would protect Out-of-Home Media assets in the country and prevent environmental cluttering.

“We strongly believe that it is in the best interest of our practice and business, as well as the industry, to have the proposed chartered status. Therefore, we do not subscribe to the statement by the HASG purporting to oppose the bill,” Akinsiku reiterated.

Dele Farotimi Claims Tinubu’s Popularity Highest in Igbo Land Amid Nationwide Protests

Human rights activist and lawyer, Dele Farotimi, stated that the ongoing nationwide protest, titled ‘End Bad Governance In Nigeria’, has demonstrated that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is more popular in South Eastern Nigeria than in any other part of the country.

Farotimi, known for his criticism of President Tinubu, pointed out that the Southeast has not seen protests similar to those in other regions, suggesting that Tinubu holds greater popularity there.

His observations came after no protests were reported in the five states of the Southeast geopolitical zone on Friday, August 2. This stands in contrast to the widespread protests that have erupted across Nigeria since August 1, 2024, driven by concerns over widespread hunger and inflation.

“Based on the geographical spread of the ongoing protests, it is safe to conclude that Tinubu is much more loved in the land of the rising sun than in any other part of Nigeria,” Farotimi wrote on his X page.

It is noteworthy that Farotimi supported the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2023 election. In that election, Obi won all the states in the Southeast, while President Tinubu secured victories in most states in the West and northern Nigeria, where the current protests have been more prominent.

“The Impact of Hormonal Imbalances on Mental Health: Key Disorders to Watch For”

Hormonal imbalances, characterized by irregular levels of hormones in the bloodstream, can profoundly affect mental health. Hormones, which act as chemical messengers, influence various bodily functions including mood regulation. Even minor imbalances can lead to significant mental health issues. Here are five mental disorders linked to hormonal imbalances:

  1. Depression: This disorder is marked by persistent sadness, disinterest, and low energy. Imbalances in thyroid hormones, estrogen, and progesterone can contribute to depressive symptoms. For example, hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone levels) is often associated with an increased risk of depression.
  2. Anxiety Disorders: These conditions involve excessive worry and nervousness. Changes in cortisol and thyroid hormone levels can worsen anxiety. Hyperthyroidism (excessive thyroid hormone production) is known to amplify anxiety symptoms.
  3. Bipolar Disorder: Characterized by alternating periods of mania and depression, bipolar disorder can be influenced by thyroid hormone imbalances. For instance, hyperthyroidism can trigger manic episodes, while hypothyroidism may lead to depressive episodes.
  4. Irritability: Often linked to hormonal fluctuations during PMS, menopause, or thyroid disorders. Increased cortisol levels, particularly due to stress, can lead to heightened irritability and mood swings.
  5. Amnesia: This condition involves memory loss, which can be exacerbated by high cortisol levels. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol can impair the hippocampus, a crucial area of the brain for memory, leading to difficulties with recall.

Understanding the relationship between hormones and mental health can help in identifying and managing these conditions effectively. If you suspect that hormonal imbalances are impacting your mental well-being, consulting a healthcare professional is essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Protest Organizers Disown Adegboruwa’s Call to End Demonstrations, Vow to Continue

Organizers of the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests have distanced themselves from human rights lawyer Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa’s call to end the nationwide demonstrations. They pledged to continue the protests until President Bola Tinubu addresses their demands.

Adegboruwa had called for an end to the rallies, citing infiltration by fifth columnists. However, protest leaders rejected his stance and reaffirmed their commitment to the cause.

Speaking on a Channels Television program on Friday, Damilare Adenola, Director of Mobilisation for the ‘Take It Back Movement,’ emphasized that the protests will persist despite the violence, looting, and property destruction that occurred on the first day. Adenola stressed that Adegboruwa does not represent their movement or speak for them.

“Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa is not our lawyer and he doesn’t speak for us. He might have presented himself as the solicitor but he is not hungry. He is a senior advocate of Nigeria who lives well. He is not hungry like the people taking over the streets,” Adenola stated.

Despite Adegboruwa’s earlier efforts to seek security protection for the organizers, Adenola clarified that the ‘Take It Back Movement’ would not suspend the 10-day protest. He asserted that the demonstrations have empowered Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable and insisted that the protests would continue until their demands are addressed.

“We are waiting for the government to respond to us and address our demands. And until then, the protests continue,” he said.

Adenola also dismissed claims that the protests were being sponsored, attributing the motivation to widespread hunger and economic deprivation. He criticized the Federal Government’s lack of sincerity and concern for the people’s plight, suggesting that the President should have already addressed the protesters’ demands if they were genuinely concerned.

Trump Agrees to Debate Kamala Harris on September 4

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump announced late Friday that he has agreed to debate his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, on Fox News on September 4.

“I have agreed with Fox News to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4th,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

It was not immediately clear if Harris had agreed to the debate.

Trump’s announcement came just hours after Harris secured the Democratic Party’s nomination as the standard bearer for the November presidential election.

Trump’s campaign faced a significant shift last month when President Joe Biden, 81, decided not to seek re-election due to growing concerns about his age and declining poll numbers, endorsing Harris instead. This decision followed a poor debate performance against Trump in June on CNN.

A second Trump-Biden debate was initially scheduled for September 10 on ABC, but Harris is now expected to replace Biden. However, a Trump spokesperson recently indicated it would be “inappropriate” to schedule a debate before Harris was formally the Democratic nominee.

Previously, Trump, 78, had expressed reluctance to debate Harris, nearly two decades his junior, deviating from political norms. Last month, Harris, a former prosecutor and ex-California attorney general, challenged Trump to a face-to-face debate.

“Well Donald, I do hope you’ll reconsider meeting me on the debate stage, because as the saying goes, if you’ve got something to say, say it to my face,” Harris stated at a campaign rally in Atlanta.

Trump announced that the debate will be held in Pennsylvania and moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum in front of a full audience. Fox News confirmed that the debate would include spectators and follow similar rules to the June 27 CNN debate between Trump and Biden.

“I look forward to meeting and debating Kamala Harris on September 4th,” Trump said, noting the date was “convenient and appropriate” as it precedes the September 6 start of early voting for the presidential election.

Kamala Harris Becomes Democratic Presidential Nominee for 2024 Election

US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, solidifying her historic candidacy against Republican Donald Trump in the November elections.

Harris, 59, emerged as the sole candidate in a five-day electronic vote involving nearly 4,000 party convention delegates, concluding on Friday.

As the first Black and South Asian woman to receive a major party’s nomination, Harris will be officially recognized at a Chicago convention later this month.

“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris expressed during a phone call to a party celebration after securing the necessary votes by the second day of the virtual vote.

Following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek re-election two weeks ago, Harris quickly consolidated her position within the party, breaking fundraising records, filling venues, and overtaking Trump in the polls.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Biden posted on X following her nomination.

Harris is set to begin her campaign tour next week, targeting seven crucial swing states, accompanied by her yet-to-be-named running mate.

The Democratic Party opted for a virtual nomination process, a departure from tradition, to meet an early deadline in Ohio for submitting certified candidates. This approach mirrors the procedure used during the pandemic-affected 2020 election.

The virtual roll call signals the official start of the 2024 convention, with traditional festivities set to commence when thousands of party members gather in Chicago on August 19.

The event will feature a ceremonial vote for Harris, celebrating her journey from California prosecutor to a groundbreaking candidate for the nation’s highest office.

Illegal Charter Jet Operations Cost Nigeria N15 Billion Annually

Aircraft Used for Money Laundering, Drug Trafficking — Stakeholders

NCAA Lacks Monitoring Capacity, Conversion to Commercial Purposes Beyond Nigeria — Analysts

In Nigeria, the aviation industry is plagued by the pervasive influence of illegal charter jet operators, resulting in significant financial losses and safety concerns. These rogue entities exploit regulatory loopholes and evade oversight, engaging in illicit activities such as money laundering and drug trafficking, which endanger passengers and undermine the sector’s integrity.

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) loses at least $10 million (N15 billion) annually due to the activities of illegal charter operators. These operators not only sidestep regulations but also collude with corrupt officials to avoid detection and penalties.

The Ministerial Taskforce on Illegal Air Charter Operations, established by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, revealed that the number of private business aircraft in Nigeria has surged from 44 in 2005 to 157 in 2024, a 357% increase in less than 20 years. The task force reported that many holders of Private Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF) licenses rent out their aircraft for commercial purposes, depriving legitimate air charter operators of business and revenue.

The NCAA has struggled to enforce PNCF conditions and monitor private jet owners effectively. An investigation uncovered that approximately 50 of the 62 private jets in the industry are used for illegal charter operations, with brands such as Embraer Legacy, Bombardier Challenger, and Gulfstream among the jets involved.

Stakeholders confirmed that illegal charter operators often evade taxes and insurance requirements, posing a risk to public safety. Capt. Ibrahim Mshelia, Chairman of West Link Airlines, emphasized the economic impact, noting that these practices lead to significant revenue loss for the government. He urged the NCAA to collaborate with the Department of State Services (DSS) to combat this economic sabotage.

Mr. Olumide Ohunayo, Director of Research at Zenith Travels, highlighted that the issue of converting private jets for commercial use extends beyond Nigeria, occurring in Europe and America as well. He stressed the importance of continued regulatory efforts and collaboration among agencies to ensure stability in the sector.

Grp. Capt. John Ojikutu, an aviation security expert, pointed out that many violators are politicians, political officeholders, or religious organizations, suggesting that some private jets might be involved in unauthorized commercial services to remain financially viable.

The NCAA’s recent suspension of three private jet owners for engaging in commercial operations in violation of their certificates reflects ongoing efforts to address this issue. However, sustained action and inter-agency cooperation are essential to uproot this network of deception and ensure accountability within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Pentagon Chief Cancels Plea Deals for Three September 11 Suspects

The Pentagon announced on Wednesday that plea deals had been reached with three suspects but withheld specifics. A U.S. official suggested these agreements likely involved guilty pleas in exchange for removing the death penalty.

On Friday, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin revoked these deals, taking the authority from Susan Escallier, who oversees the Pentagon’s Guantanamo war court, and assuming the responsibility himself. “Effective immediately, in the exercise of my authority, I hereby withdraw from the three pre-trial agreements,” Austin wrote in a memo.

The plea deals had faced significant opposition from many Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the most well-known inmate at Guantanamo Bay, is accused of masterminding the September 11 attacks, which killed nearly 3,000 people and led to the United States’ two-decade-long war in Afghanistan. Plea deals had also been reached with two other detainees: Walid Muhammad Salih Mubarak Bin ‘Attash and Mustafa Ahmed Adam al Hawsawi.
