Kenneth Okonkwo: ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Fails to Reflect Economic Reality

Veteran Nollywood actor and politician Kenneth Okonkwo has criticized the recently approved ₦70,000 minimum wage, stating it does not reflect the current economic reality in Nigeria.

In an interview with journalist Seun Okinbaloye on the ‘Mic On’ podcast, Okonkwo argued that the previous ₦30,000 minimum wage was more valuable than the current ₦70,000. He highlighted that when President Bola Tinubu’s administration took office, the exchange rate was ₦500 to the dollar, compared to the current ₦1,500. He emphasized, “The ₦30,000 minimum wage people were earning before this government came in was of greater value than the current ₦70,000.”

Okonkwo questioned the administration’s achievements, pointing out the significant devaluation of the naira and its impact on workers’ earnings.

Pep Guardiola Admits Responsibility After Manchester City’s £2.09 Million Fine for Delaying Kickoffs

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted his role in the £2.09 million fine imposed on the club by the Premier League for repeatedly delaying match kickoffs and second-half restarts.

The reigning champions committed 22 instances of delays, starting with a one-minute and 18-second delay against Crystal Palace in August 2022, which initially resulted in a warning. Continued breaches led to fines based on the length of the delays, with the longest being two minutes and 46 seconds against West Ham in the final game of the last season.

Ahead of Manchester City’s pre-season friendly against Chelsea, Guardiola acknowledged the issue, attributing the delays to his lengthy halftime team talks. He stated, “I just read it in the news. I would try to make my speeches at halftime shorter.”

This fine is separate from the 115 charges Manchester City faces for alleged breaches of the Premier League’s financial regulations, which could result in severe penalties, including potential relegation.

Ex-Minister Frank Nweke Jr’s Six Urgent Recommendations for President Tinubu Amid Protests

Former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jr, has outlined six critical steps for President Bola Tinubu to address the ongoing hunger protests across Nigeria.

Nweke urged the President to directly engage with citizens facing economic hardships and avoid using intermediaries. He called for an immediate investigation into the deaths of peaceful protesters at the hands of security forces.

The former APGA governorship candidate from Enugu emphasized the need for President Tinubu to reduce government spending and combat corruption. Nweke also stressed the importance of holding state governors accountable for their responsibilities.

On his X handle, Nweke Jr stated, “Speak with Nigerians directly. He must listen to and address Nigerians directly, not through tone-deaf surrogates.

“Demand an immediate investigation into the reported killings across the country and hold the security services accountable for the life of every Nigerian that has been cut short.

“Take immediate and definite steps that show a commitment to reducing the size and cost of governance, reviewing the salaries of public officials downwards, and going beyond lip service to combat corruption and profligacy in the government.

“Put the state governments on the line. Federal Accounts Allocations increased by 179% in the first five months of 2024 as a result of the unpopular subsidy removal.

“With some states receiving almost 100% more money, the president must call on state governments to deliver on their responsibilities and seek a structured partnership with citizens to hold state governments accountable.

“Following the ruling that it is unconstitutional for State governors to receive, tamper, or administer funds meant for Local Governments, the Federal Government must create an accountability and monitoring mechanism to hold Local Governments accountable for providing critical services to citizens.

“The president must continue to urge Nigerians to embrace constructive engagement, employing the services of eminent citizens to midwife national conversations between government and citizens about the state of the nation to arrive at a consensus on the way forward.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris has secured the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination, cementing her role as the party’s standard bearer against Republican Donald Trump in the upcoming November election.

Harris, 59, was the sole candidate on the ballot for a five-day electronic vote of nearly 4,000 party convention delegates. As the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s nomination, she will be officially confirmed at a Chicago convention later this month.

“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris announced during a phone-in to a party celebration after securing enough votes by the second day of the marathon virtual vote.

Since Joe Biden ended his reelection bid two weeks ago, Harris has gained full control of the party, breaking fundraising records, drawing large crowds, and diminishing the polling leads that Trump had built over the president.

“I couldn’t be prouder,” Biden posted on X following her nomination.

With the nomination secured, Harris is preparing to hit the campaign trail next week for a tour across seven key election states, accompanied by her yet-to-be-named running mate.

The Democratic Party opted for a virtual nomination process, diverging from tradition and reflecting the procedure used during the pandemic-hit 2020 election, due to an early deadline in Ohio for submitting certified candidates’ names.

The virtual roll call marks the official start of the 2024 convention, with more traditional festivities commencing when thousands of party supporters gather in Chicago on August 19.

The convention will feature a ceremonial vote for Harris in what is expected to be a jubilant celebration of her rise from California prosecutor to historic presidential candidate.

Trump’s campaign was significantly impacted on July 21 when 81-year-old Biden, facing growing concerns about his age and declining polling numbers, withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Harris.

Energized and two decades younger than 78-year-old Trump, Harris has made a strong start, raising $310 million in July, according to her campaign — more than double Trump’s total.

To jointly advance the conservation of ‘birds of good fortune’

By Akio Nakajima (Japan)

The crested ibis, known as the “bird of good fortune,” is widely cherished by people in Northeast Asia. In 1981, researchers discovered seven wild crested ibises in the heart of the Qinling Mountains in Northwest China’s Shaanxi province. After years of breeding and conservation, the global population of crested ibises has increased to over 10,000.

China’s protection of crested ibises serves as a global model for saving endangered species, and significant progress has been made through the collaborative protection efforts of China and Japan. Thanks to this magical bird, I have also developed a deep bond with China.

In the late 20th century, wild crested ibises disappeared in Japan due to environmental degradation caused by economic development, illegal hunting, and other factors. The captive crested ibises also lost the ability to breed.

From 1998 to 2018, China gave seven crested ibises to Japan, helping the country rebuild the species. As a result, the number of captive crested ibises living on Sado island, Niigata prefecture, Japan, has been steadily increasing.

I have been engaged in crested ibis conservation, research, and rewilding programs on Sado Island since 2000. It was also in that year that a female ibis named Mei Mei gifted by China arrived in Japan. It received good care and protection in Japan and mated with Yuu Yuu, the offspring of two crested ibises, Yang Yang and You You, which were gifted by China in 1999. They went on to have many offspring together.

In 2007, Japan returned 13 young crested ibises to China, which were all descendants of Mei Mei and well protected in the Dongzhai National Nature Reserve in Luoshan county, Xinyang city, central China’s Henan province.

Since then, I have been closely following news about the nature reserve, keen to learn more about these birds. I also hoped that one day I could visit the reserve and see them for myself.

In October 2017, I traveled to Tongchuan city, Shaanxi province to participate in an exchange event about crested ibis protection. While there, I received an invitation to the fourth crested ibis release event at the nature reserve and immediately changed my schedule. Upon arriving at the reserve, I visited a crested ibis breeding station and was impressed by the dedicated work of Chinese experts in protecting the species, which led to a significant increase in their population.

The facilities at the breeding station were very well-arranged to support the crested ibises’ growth and living conditions, while also offering visitors a memorable experience. I was filled with excitement when personally seeing the crested ibises that had returned to China from Sado Island ten years ago, along with their offspring, living peacefully.

I made a thorough observation of the environment and facilities, especially the living conditions of the crested ibises. I could not wait to share this information with my colleagues and friends in Japan.

The next morning, I joined the crested ibis release event hosted by the nature reserve. A total of 22 captive crested ibises returned to the nature, bringing the number of released ibises in the region to 100. From the initial few individuals to the large-scale release, this achievement embodies the tremendous efforts of Chinese experts.

The sight of the graceful crested ibises spreading their wings and flying high ignited a powerful feeling within me, as if I could already see a future where these birds soar freely in the skies of Northeast Asia.

A year later, I returned to the nature reserve to observe the breeding habits of crested ibises. At a crayfish farming ponds where crested ibises often forage, I saw an ibis feeding. Crested ibises enjoy eating crustaceans, and the vibrant colors of their feathers come from the chitin in these creatures. Through binoculars, I saw their beautiful plumage, which indicated that they were receiving good care and protection.

I also learned that local elementary schools often launch promotional campaigns about crested ibis conservation. I hope that Japanese and Chinese schools can engage in more exchanges and cooperation on crested ibis protection in the coming future.

Through my interactions with Chinese experts, I gained valuable insights into the conservation of crested ibis and the harmonious coexistence between the birds and the local community. The Chinese people’s hospitality and friendliness made a lasting impression on me throughout this process.

I am very much looking forward to visiting China again, the nature reserve in particular, to engage in more extensive discussions with Chinese experts about wild crested ibis monitoring and scientific research cooperation between Japan and China. I also hope to make due contributions to the conservation of crested ibis.

According to historical documents, the crested ibis was a migratory bird with a widespread presence across Northeast Asia. I believe that in the near future, with the collaborative efforts of people in Northeast Asian countries, these “birds of good fortune” will restore their migratory habits. They will then serve as a bridge and symbol of friendly exchanges among Northeast Asian countries.
