Singapore Mandates Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Departing Flights, Impacting Ticket Prices

Starting in 2026, flights departing from Singapore will be required to use sustainable aviation fuel as part of the country’s efforts to progressively decarbonize airline operations. The initiative is outlined in Singapore’s sustainable air hub blueprint developed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The move comes with an associated levy on the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel, and passengers can expect ticket prices to rise based on factors such as distance traveled and class of travel.

The initial target is a 1% sustainable aviation fuel uplift in 2026, with the goal of providing a demand signal to fuel producers and encouraging investment in sustainable aviation fuel production facilities. The target is set to increase to between 3% and 5% by 2030, contingent on global developments and the wider availability and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel.

Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat stated that the cost impact of the 1% target is deemed manageable, and stakeholders have been consulted in the decision-making process. The levies introduced to achieve this target could lead to increased ticket prices, with specific amounts depending on factors such as the destination and class of travel. Premium class passengers are expected to face higher levies.

CAAS will continue to engage with stakeholders and plans to announce further details in 2025 closer to the implementation date. The move is aimed at fostering sustainable growth in the aviation industry, balancing economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.

Nigerian Agricultural Colleges Committee Urges Government Against Leasing Institution Lands

The National Committee of Heads of Colleges of Agriculture and Related Disciplines (NACHCARD) has appealed to the Nigerian federal government to reconsider its plan to lease lands within their institutions for food production.

During its 65th Regular Meeting in Abuja, the committee acknowledged the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security’s (FMAFS) request for information on available lands for food production in the colleges. However, NACHCARD stressed the importance of the ministry providing funds and inputs to the colleges instead of leasing their lands to external parties, to prevent potential encroachment by land grabbers.

The committee also advised FMAFS to collaborate with and support the colleges for training in agriculture, as well as the execution of farmers’ and extension workers’ programs.

The communiqué issued by NACHCARD expressed concern about the recent decrease in student enrollment in agricultural colleges. This decline was attributed to the lowering of JAMB cutoffs for universities and the increasing number of polytechnics offering agricultural courses. The committee warned that if this trend persists, it could undermine the purpose of establishing the colleges and jeopardize the government’s efforts to encourage youth participation in agriculture, impacting overall food security initiatives.

Additionally, NACHCARD called for the swift inauguration of the NADFUND board to enhance the effectiveness of the emergency declared on food security. The committee advocated for agricultural colleges at federal and state levels to be given top priority in fund allocation, highlighting their exclusion from TetFund intervention since 2010 as an oversight.

Lastly, NACHCARD observed that some government agency application portals, especially in the military and paramilitary sectors, do not include Monotechnics in the list of tertiary institutions. This omission denies qualified graduates from agricultural colleges the opportunity to participate in recruitment exercises, prompting an appeal for inter-ministerial dialogue to address the issue.

5 Compelling Reasons to Embrace a Social Media Cleanse

While social media serves as a valuable tool for staying connected, informed, and even making money, the incessant notifications and platform-switching can leave many feeling overwhelmed and mentally drained. If you’ve experienced such sentiments, a social media cleanse might be the solution.

What is a social media cleanse?
A social media cleanse, also termed a digital detox, involves taking a break from social networking sites for a designated period, allowing individuals to disconnect from the virtual world and prioritize their mental well-being.

Here are five benefits of a social media cleanse:

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety:
Frequent exposure to social media can induce stress and anxiety, contributing to a fear of missing out (FOMO) and feelings of inadequacy. A social media cleanse offers respite, helping individuals alleviate stress and regain a sense of calm.
  2. Improved mental health:
Excessive use of social media has been linked to increased rates of depression, loneliness, and low self-esteem, particularly among young adults and teenagers. Stepping away from these platforms enables individuals to focus on activities that enhance mental well-being.
  3. Enhanced productivity:
Breaking the cycle of mindlessly scrolling through social media during work or study hours, a social media cleanse improves productivity by eliminating distractions. With fewer temptations to check notifications or browse news feeds, individuals can channel their time and energy into more meaningful tasks.
  4. Better sleep quality:
The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt the body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, impacting the ability to fall asleep at night. Additionally, late-night social media use can heighten arousal and anxiety, further compromising sleep quality. Disconnecting from social media promotes better sleep hygiene and a more restful night’s sleep.
  5. Increased presence and connection:
In an era of hyper-connectivity, real-life interactions can be overshadowed by virtual engagements. A social media cleanse encourages individuals to be present in their everyday lives, fostering deeper connections with those around them. Whether spending quality time with family, engaging in face-to-face conversations with friends, or exploring new hobbies, a social media cleanse encourages meaningful offline connections.

Desist from curating, spreading falsehood against Sen. Yayi- CSGGG warns Yewa/Awori Youth Network

…Says Senator Yayi’s purposeful representation has no equal

An assemblage of over 180 civil society organization in Nigeria, Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, CSGGG, has warned the socio-democratic group, Yewa/Awori Youth Network, against making false assertions, accusations and inflammable statements capable of denying their district, further benefits from the federal government.

Reacting to a statement made by the network, accusing the Senator representing Ogun West at the National Assembly, Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi of allegedly personalising projects funded by the federal government; the group described the statement as an unsubstantial and baseless finding politically orchestrated and sponsored to bring disrepute to the commitment and milestones attained by Yayi.

The President of the group, Comrade Ogakwu Dominic, in a press statement made available to newsmen on Thursday, equally faulted the allegations that the senator had connived with some federal government agencies to portray projects funded by the federal government as one done from his personal coffers. He emphasized that projects introduced or executed by Yayi, should serve as a source of pride not a source of political witch-hunting.

The statement reads: “As watchdog of the society and as first hand observers who were invited by the organizers of the three days empowerment programme of Distinguished Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola aka Yayi, our attention has been drawn to the recent publications by Yewa/Awori Youth Network, against Senator Solomon Yayi. While it is obvious as usual that political traducers and co-travelers are on the verge of series of campaign of calumny against a performing steward and it may not be too necessary to dignify their action, it is also equally important to put the record straight to avoid the pitfall of a poor public perception of the good intentions of what can be described as the “Mother of all empowerment” as we cannot sit back and allow their fabricated tales gain momentum for even a second.

“Senator Yayi, has never taken personal credit for project executed, in fact if the network did their due diligence without bias or have the interest of Ogun West as they claimed, by keenly recording the empowerment schemes of Senator Adeola, they would have discovered that Yayi, has always, disclosed and given credit to the MDAs where Zonal Interventions Projects are domiciled or facilitated from. Also he openly stated that the projects were facilitated to enhance and improve the district that has suffered lack of major development for the longest time as a result of bad representation and incapable leadership.

“For deeper understanding, in the scholarship and bursary schemes as alleged by the network, Senator Yayi indicated that it was in collaboration with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), for the ICT training on security, he facilitated for traditional rulers in Ogun West, he mentioned it was done in collaboration with the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), and in the area of empowerment of artisans and various vocational trainings, he categorically disclosed that it was in collaboration with the Nigeria Institute of Oceanography and Marine Research.

“We believe that the Yewa/Awori Youth Network, are just fault finders and puppets to shadow parties, that are invested in diagnosing loopholes in political positions they have interest in. May we reiterate that Senator Yayi’s empowerment programs are unprecedented in annals of National Assembly empowerment initiatives, because it takes only a transparent, committed, visionary and accountable leader like Yayi to carry out such massive initiatives. The network should take pride in the achievements not fight or work to condemn it, because such as we all know can bridge further initiative or benefits.

“Yewa/ Awori Youth Network attack on Senator Yayi, is very inconsequential and also a sheer display of ignorance because the people have come to realize the benefits of complete entrenchment of dividends of quality representation first hand through the Adeola aka Yayi’s empowerment schemes across the five local government areas in the senatorial district. From their watery accusations, it is now a known fact that the network, lack an understanding of the workings of the National Assembly and Zonal Intervention Projects as domiciled in the MDAs.” It added.

“Wike, Abuja Investment Company Limited, and Advancements in the Development of the Federal Capital Territory”

Since the 21st of August 2023, when Chief Nyesom Wike resumed office as the Hon Minister of the FCT, Abuja has not been the same. The FCT has become once more a big construction site with road works causing diversions and attendant traffic jam. The citizens of Abuja definitely see and feel the arrival of Mr. Project as he is fondly called by adversaries and admirers. Abuja is changing just as Port Harcourt changed. I have met with Nyesom Wike and he touched my life on our first meeting without asking for anything in return. I owe him advise based on my experience.

All stakeholders to the FCT have the obligation to rally round Mr. Project to succeed in his avowed task of retaining Abuja’s Master plan, secure the FCT and tackle the problem of land grabbing amongst other challenges of the FCT.

Among the stakeholders, the staff of the Ministries, Parastatal Agencies and companies in the FCT make up the engine room to facilitate and actualize this objective. Of all of them, Abuja Investment Company Limited is at the heart of the engine room. Reason being that development and administration costs a lot of money and resources. The State of our economy and the lean resources has even made it more difficult than ever before. Inflation has raised the cost of development and resources to the highest level ever. Meanwhile, insecurity across Nigeria has forced Abuja to grow beyond the original target of about 3 million to well over 7 million people with the attendant pressure on infrastructure.

This is where AICL Abuja Investment Company limited comes in. Abuja Investment Company limited AICL is a Nigeria Development and Investments company of the Federal Capital Territory for the Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA. It provides investments for the economic development for Federal Capital Territory region in Nigeria. It is the Flagship Investment and holding company for the FCT.

Abuja Investment company Ltd is an investment company with the mission to develop Abuja into a world class city using private sector funds from local and foreign sources. It’s the landing pad for investors seeking to invest in Abuja without the bottleneck and bureaucracy of the Civil Service. It serves as a nursery for development and investment of ideas and processes for investors. It takes care of teething problems faced by investors with investible funds by saving time and

irritating bottlenecks. So, the investor comes in and hit the ground running. In football AICL is the midfield, the engine room that creates the move and gives the attacker the through pass to score the goal.

The need for AICL has become even more profound today because there is need for a trillion United States Dollars to develop Abuja into a world class city like London, Singapore, Dubai or New York.

However, Mr. Project has to rely on a budget of 1 trillion Naira to do the magic. That is impossible, AICL has to step in by bridging the gap between the FCTA and the investors who have these funds in Abuja, Lagos, New York, Frankfort, London, Dubai, Qatar and Singapore to come down to Macedonia and help us.

A foreign investor in Dubai understands the language spoken at AICL more than that spoken at the ministry because of time constraints. He comes in a private jet or first- class ticket and has 48 hours to tie up a deal to inject USD 100 million to build an ultra-modern 7-star hospital or build a USD 20 million world class abattoir. He may be interested in investing USD 4 billion to set up modern Dubai type of urban transit system integrated with Digital Security System to make committing pleasurable, safe and reduce crime to the barest minimum.

AICL should be able to sort out all issues of land with the ministry, permits with Government MDA’s, feasibility and viability reports and insolate these investors from the harsh and rudimentary economic environment. Doing this attracts that fund for the benefit of Abuja stakeholders thereby saving our hard-working minister the stress of looking for resources but concentrate on administration of the FCT.

Mr. Project needs his match at Abuja Investments Company Ltd. I wish Mr. Project a successful tenure.

Hon. Osita Opara is the immediate past chairman of Investment and Strategy Committees of the Board of Abuja Investment Company Ltd.

He is a serial Entrepreneur; An Investment Banker; A development Enthusiasts.

Chieftaincy Law: Group raises alarm over plan by disgruntled elements to cause chaos in Kano

The Centre for Africa Liberation and Socio-Economic Rights (CALSER) has raised an alarm over a purported plan to tinker with the local government and chieftaincy affairs law in Kano State to favour the deposed Emir Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

The Centre, at a press conference on Wednesday, also alleged that some elements are taking illegal means to reverse this law not minding the consequences for the stability of the state.

In his address, the executive director Dr. Amodu Ben said some members of the state assembly are being induced and coerced into entertaining this dangerous plot.

Ben further said that the end game is to have Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf speedily assent to this controversial amendment and hurriedly reinstate Sanusi.

“At CALSER, we have multiple concerns. First, what becomes of the current emirs of Rano, Karaye, Bichi, and Gaya, whose deposition the hatchers of this plot are indirectly calling for? It is on record that there is no infraction found against any of them, so the promoters of this plot have to honestly answer this question,” he added.

“They also have to explain how the government should manage the outrage and protests that will come from the subjects of these emirs as they have become accustomed to the leadership they provide.

“We also think that hatching and attempting to implement a dangerous plan of this nature is uncalled for at a time when the depressed economy and cost of living crisis have already primed major cities across the country for implosion and explosion with citizens looking for the slightest excuses to start protesting, which is most likely to turn violent given the level of economic pressure that people are under.

“It is most unfortunate that Lamido Sanusi, encouraged by the Kano State Governor and some members of the Kano State House of Assembly, is attempting to tap into this populist anger in his bid to clinch back a position he lost under a different administration that followed due process to remove him.”

The Centre, therefore, warned “Sanusi that while he is free to set his home state on fire the rest of Nigeria does not want to be caught in the conflagration that will result from this evil enterprise.”

Been added: “He needs to advise himself correctly that this is not the same as grandstanding with populist comments and interventions in the media, taking the steps to physically implement a comeback is a charade that will cost lives and unleash destruction beyond his anticipation.

“We equally urge Governor Abba Yusuf that there is still time to retrace his steps and not deliberately plunge the state into crisis. Our most profound message to the Governor is that there is a limit to politicking – the hostile reaction to his unpopular demolition of structures and the knife edge on which the state walked the height of the election petition tribunal and court rulings would be child’s play compared to the inferno he is stoking by agreeing to this misadventure of plotting to merge emirates and reinstate a deposed emir.

“The governor must understand and acknowledge the dangers of mixing politics and the traditional institution as this is a sure recipe for destroying this institution that has provided stability for the society in this part of the country.”
