3D-printed figurines chased after by athletes at Chengdu Universiade

By Sun Longfei, People’s Daily

Chinese hurdling star Wu Yanni, who competed at the recent 31st FISU World University Games held in Chengdu, southwest China’s Sichuan province, recently received a special birthday present – a 3D printed figurine of herself.

The miniaturized model depicted Wu holding a Rongbao, the mascot of the Chengdu Universiade, in one hand and a torch in the other.

“This is unbelievable,” Wu exclaimed upon seeing the vivid details like the strands of hair in her braids. She was amazed that the gift captured her likeness so intricately.

Such an exquisite figurine is available to all members of the Chengdu Universiade delegations whose birthdays fall between July 22 and Aug 11 at a 3D photo studio in the Sci-tech Services Workstation of the Universiade Village.

The studio, which covers only seven square meters, is equipped with 82 cameras that can take 800 photos of a person from different angles in three seconds. Through AI modeling, the studio builds a lifelike 3D model of the person and then prints the figurine with photosensitive resin.

According to Gu Li, who works at the studio, such figurines normally can be printed in heights of 9 cm, 12 cm, 15 cm and 18 cm, and the details are presented better on bigger ones. She said the souvenirs received by the members of delegations were the 18 cm version.

“The 3D printing technology is very mature now. The figurines don’t fade easily and can be preserved for many years,” she told People’s Daily.

Transforming 2D photos into 3D models, this ingenious technology infuses the souvenirs with warmth, creating treasured memories for participants from around the world.

Many athletes showed their signature moves while taking photos. A Singaporean rhythmic gymnast did a needle split; a Polish athlete mimicked drawing a bow; an athlete flexed his muscles wearing a cute Rongbao hat to show a sharp contrast. Some posed in front of the cameras wearing swimsuits and medals.

The diverse and lively figurines will be a unique memory of members of delegations around the world to the Chengdu Universiade.

Gu said that a Brazilian coach had recently brought a group to have their figurines made. They visited the studio early for two days in a row, eager to receive their finished models.

To meet demand, the normal 15-day production time was compressed to 4 days. So far, over 100 people from dozens of delegations have received their birthday gifts from the studio.

It will effectively promote China’s technology and culture when participants bring home the souvenirs with Chinese and Chengdu characteristics, said He Xingcheng, business director of SW 3D, the company that runs the studio.

Apart from the studio, there are many other tech products that bring convenience to the “villagers,” including a smart online interpretation system that supports 83 languages, a cooling vest that maintains a consistent temperature of 23 degrees Celcius, and a robotic barista that can make customized coffee in 90 seconds. The Chengdu Universiade just amazed the world with technologies.

China National Archives of Publications and Culture tells stories of civilization exchanges

By Liu Chengyong

In the long course of human history, many civilizations emerged. Some faded away with the passage of time, and some endured despite twists and turns.

Chinese civilization has remained uninterrupted for thousands of years, only growing more vibrant as time passes. This would not have been possible without the collection, preservation and passing down of classics and publications.

Oracle bones, pottery symbols, bronze inscriptions, stone carvings, seals, bamboo and wooden slips, woodblock printing, rubbings, ancient books, chorography, maps – these artifacts record the marks of Chinese civilization, character symbols, and cultural context. They are the creators of the Chinese civilization and witnesses to the Chinese history.

Today, these cultural treasures of the Chinese nation are preserved and presented at the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, which comprises headquarter in Beijing and branches in Xi’an, Hangzhou and Guangzhou. They strengthen the bridge of mutual learning between China and civilizations worldwide.

Boasting a rich and valuable collection, the China National Archives of Publications and Culture is dubbed as a cultural gene bank of the Chinese nation. It collects nearly 24 million precious copies and editions of various publications and gathers almost 500 million data entries, with 24 million open to the public.

Like a time tunnel, the editions and copies archived tell the stories of exchanges and mutual learning among human civilizations, such as the journey of Zhang Qian, a royal envoy in China’s Han Dynasty (202BC-220AD), to the Western regions via Central Asia, which eventually led to the opening of the ancient Silk Road, the “Journey to the West” by Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang  (618-907), the story of Tang Dynasty monk Jianzhen who brought Buddhism to Japan, and the legendary voyage to Southeast Asia, South Asia, West Asia, and East Africa by Chinese navigator Zheng He of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

They record the extraordinary journeys of different civilizations, from their initial encounters to the exchanges and mutual learning that developed between them across various historical stages.

During the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), China was a leading country in terms of navigation technologies. A green-glazed bowl with Chinese character Ji exhibited at the headquarter of the China National Archives of Publications and Culture was salvaged from the Shipwreck Huaguangjiao No.1 of the Southern Song Dynasty.

In Chinese, Ji symbolizes the Chinese people’s longing for an auspicious and peaceful life. This relic mirrors the demeanor of ancient Chinese sailing afar and pioneering outward on the Maritime Silk Road hundreds of years ago.

The archives gathers a wealth of other valuable items that witness the history of cultural exchanges. These include a Song Dynasty (960-1279) edition of the Great Tang Records on the Western Regions, which chronicles Xuanzang’s journey along the ancient Silk Road. Also featured is a copy of the original 1688 French publication of “An Introduction to The Analects of Confucius.” This work marked the first communication of Confucian thought in French, and was a national gift to Chinese President Xi Jinping from his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in 2019.

Two “cultural exchange day” events were recently held at the China National Archives of Publications and Culture, which were joined by 88 sinologists from some 60 countries as well as over 30 foreign experts of culture, museum studies and publishing.

They were amazed by the infrastructure construction, high-quality exhibitions and displays, and the tremendous cultural treasures of the China National Archives of Publications and Culture. They also expressed their hope to strengthen communication with the archives and jointly promote the inheritance and preservation of Chinese classics and materials overseas.

With a focus on its core mission of collection, the China National Archives of Publications and Culture reaches out to the grassroots, general public, and overseas to comprehensively advance surveys, investigations, and acquisitions.

Adhering to the principles of collecting everything that should be collected, and preserving everything that should be preserved, it brings together Chinese classics and materials scattered across the country, circulating among the people, and lost overseas. It strives to include editions embodying the outstanding cultural achievements of human civilization, gathering strength for advancing human development and progress.

Different nations and civilizations are rich in diversity and have their own distinct features. No one is superior or inferior to others. Based on its diverse collection, the China National Archives of Publications and Culture strengthens mutual learning among civilizations, builds communication mechanisms and dialogue platforms for cultural exchanges, carries out international cultural exchange and people-to-people communication activities, and gathers domestic and foreign experts to launch theoretical and practical studies of bibliography.

At the same time, assisted by technology, industry and art, the archives actively innovates communication and promotion approaches, explores to establish multidimensional cultural communication paths, and works to realize the expression of bibliography in diverse forms. It excavates and presents the Chinese culture, vividly tells the historical and cultural stories behind Chinese classics and materials, and displays and disseminates the beauty of civilization and the splendor of culture.

31st FISU Games activates new momentum for Chengdu’s development

By Li Kaixuan, People’s Daily

Games of the Chengdu Universiade are exciting and thrilling, while in the streets and alleyways of Chengdu, scenes of people living in peace and contentment can be seen everywhere.
The Chengdu Universiade just infused youthful vigor into the city, giving it new splendor and vitality.
The sports event has made Chengdu more beautiful and livable. It marks the first time that a city in western China hosts a major international comprehensive sports event. To hold it, Chengdu has built featured blocks and new public service facilities, which all enhance the sense of fulfillment of Chengdu citizens.
Thanks to the Chengdu Universiade, roads in the city are wider and flatter; parks have been built on old streets; over 1,200 old residential complexes are renovated.
Hosting the sports event stimulated new drivers of urban development for Chengdu. New scenarios of sports consumption are emerging in the city, and the sports industry and relevant industrial chains have been strengthened. Chengdu is listed as one of the first national pilot cities for sports consumption, and its sports industry exceeded 100 billion yuan ($13.99 billion) last year.
The Chengdu Universiade has brought abundant development opportunities for the city, promoted steady progress of building Chengdu into a world-renowned city of sports events, and created brighter prospects for Chengdu’s sports industry.
Recently, riding the wave of the Chengdu Universiade, a series of cultural exchange activities have kicked off in Chengdu, including the “Time Gravity – 2023 Chengdu Biennale” exhibition at the Tianfu Art Park, which staged performances by artists from some 20 countries and regions. In recent years, the rich cultural offerings have added more cultural flair and depth to Chengdu, significantly enhancing the international influence of the city’s arts scene.
The Chengdu Universiade ignited Chengdu citizens’ passion for sports, who now see fitness activities as a rising trend. Over recent years, Chengdu has built more than 200 “sports corners” in local communities. Additionally, public sports venues are open for free or at a low price, benefiting more than 4.6 million people. More than 5,000 fitness activities, including community and rural sports events, are being held each year. Hiking, playing ball games and biking down greenways have become go-to leisure pastimes for many Chengdu residents these days.
Today’s Chengdu is a miniature of the broader Chinese modernization. Its future is worth expecting.

China to make greater contributions to building clean, beautiful world

By Ren Ping, People’s Daily

Waliguan Mountain is located in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, which is often referred to as “the roof of the world” and features an average altitude of over 3,800 meters above sea level. On the top of the mountain stands the China Global Atmosphere Watch Baseline Observatory, the highest baseline observatory in the world and the only one in the hinterland of Eurasia.

In the nearly 30 years since the observatory was established in 1994, generations of meteorologists have worked tirelessly day and night, producing the “Waliguan curve” that mirrors the variation of carbon dioxide concentration in the hinterland of Eurasia.

The “Waliguan curve” is of vital significance in proving climate change of the world and in supporting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is another example of China actively participating in and leading global ecological environment governance.

Earth is the only planet that humanity calls home, so protecting the ecological environment and promoting sustainable development are responsibilities shared by all countries.

In recent years, challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, and extreme weather events have posed grave threats to human existence and progress.

Guided by the interests of all humanity, China has not only advanced its own ecological progress, but also actively participated in global environmental governance, providing more public goods to the rest of the world.

China has proposed a series of ideas like building a shared future for all life on Earth, made strategic decisions like carbon peaking and neutrality goals, promoted the construction of a green Belt and Road, and successfully hosted prominent events such as the second part of the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity(COP15) and the 14th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands(COP14).

China is committed to putting multilateralism into action and promoting a fair and equitable system of global environmental governance for win-win cooperation, so as to facilitate sustainable development and build a clean, beautiful world.

China’s ecological achievements have gained wide international recognition, making China an important participant, contributor, and trailblazer in global ecological conservation.

The ecological environment concerns the wellbeing of all peoples. Only by taking into full account people’s longing for a better life and a good environment as well as the world’s responsibility for future generations, can social equity and justice be delivered in the course of green transition and people’s sense of benefit, happiness and security be increased.

As it’s often said in China, “It is more important to show people how to fish than just giving them fish.” That’s exactly what China has followed in participating in and leading global ecological governance. China has done its best to help other developing countries build capacity against climate change.

In Kazakhstan, a China-invested energy conservation project breathed new life into the Shymkent Oil Refinery, one of the three biggest refineries in the Central Asian country; in Nepal’s Terai plain, Chinese green fertilizer trials boosted wheat and other crop yields by up to 400 percent; in over 100 countries including the Central African Republic, Fiji, and Laos, Chinese Juncao technology created many green jobs for local communities…

From technical exchanges to project development, and from personnel training to infrastructure improvement, China has achieved a series of tangible and effective cooperation results that have brought the fruits of development and sound ecosystems to the peoples of all countries in a fairer manner.

An 8K ultra-high-definition video taken by China’s Shenzhou-13 crew on China’s space station went viral last year. The breathtaking cosmic scenery is a reminder that the shared home of humanity, the Earth, needs joint stewardship.

As China embarks on a new journey, it will strive to build a modernization defined by harmony between humanity and nature. China will continue leveraging its own ecological progress to facilitate global ecological progress, take an active role in leading global environmental governance, and work hand-in-hand with all other countries to make greater contributions to building a clean and beautiful world.

FCC: Clandestine Plot For Former/Interim Commission Secretary Bound To Fail, says Group

….Demands Arrest, Prosecution of Haruna Kolo.

The attention of the Amalgamated CSOs of Nigeria (ACN), an anti-corruption, pro-democracy, pressure group and human rights activists, has been drawn to the on-going investigations and hearing by the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating job racketeering and mismanagement of IPPIS in MDAs across the country, chaired by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi. The CSOs wonder why it is only the Federal Character Commission (FCC) that has been consistently intimated, harangued and made a public spectacle instead of all other MDAs summoned to appear before the Ad-hoc Committee.

The ACN is miffed as to the shoddy treatment and unprofessional manner, including the magnitude of with-hunting carried too far by the FCC Federal Commissioners from Osun and Lagos states who, according to findings, are the master-minds that have consistently worked in tandem with Haruna Kolo, their so-called star witness for the hearing, who has refused to continue to show up for the hearing according to the Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, who said “I also don’t know why Kolo is not coming back to appear before the Committee, he seems to have absconded. I will sign a letter to AMCON to produce Kolo on Thursday.”

The Chairman also emphasized that “It is better he listens to us, unless he is acting a script and selling lies to us, he should come so we can interact with him. We owe everybody the duty of care,” according to Rep. Yusuf Gadgi, who went further to say, “We need him by 10am tomorrow (Thursday), the Clerk of the Committee should call AMCON on phone, tell them to produce Kolo or do they know what Kolo is hiding.” He also asked rhetorically, “Kolo cannot come and tell us he collected money, linked it to a personality and not be willing to substantiate the claim.”

It can be confirmed that AMCON is part of the agencies yet to attend and honour the invitation from the Reps Ad-hoc Committee. It will be recalled that during the week, other star witnesses appeared and revealed to the House what transpired. The two witnesses were: Abdulmalik Isah and Ali Muhammad Yero. These witnesses confirmed paying a combined sum of N3 million for job placements to Haruna Kolo. Their testimonies before the lawmakers came on the heels of confessions by a former mastermind and disgruntled protocol officer at the FCC, Haruna Kolo, that he received millions of Naira from job seekers on behalf of his boss by remitting the cash value without receipts and empirical evidence to show for it.

A press statement signed by the National President of the Amalgamation of CSOs of Nigeria (ACN), Comrade Gbanga Ashiru Abiodun and National Secretary, Comrade Yakubu Abdullahi, said the Almagamated CSOs have it on good authority that the Osun and Lagos Federal Commissioners are part of the large anti-Tinubu forces in both states.

The duo worked assiduously behind the scene against the Tinubu Campaign and Presidency, and that is why they are hell-bent to smear, possibly remove through the back door. To achieve this, they written series of petitions to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), the office of Attorney-General of the Federation, the Chief of Staff to the President, the Chief of Army Staff, who is from Osogbo, Osun State, all in a bid to tarnish, shame and disgrace Dr Dankaka from her office.

But our coalition states authoritatively that these clandestine plots will surely fail as facts emerging from the hearing have proven otherwise. Therefore, the group strongly condemns the manner the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee handled the issues thus far as “a calculated with-hunt deliberately orchestrated as if the Committee was only out to deal with Dr Dankaka in the midst of so many other MDAs that have been left in the lurch and the FCC singled out for these phantom lies and fallacies.”

The Amalgamated CSOs further states: “We are sending a note of caution to the SGF, AGF, COAS and other anti-graft agencies, particularly the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to be weary and mindful of the mischievous plots and campaigns of calumny orchestrated by these elements of destabilization and to also discountenance and disparage their petitions as enemies of the President Ahmed Bola Tinubu administration and Dr Dankaka’s leadership.”

They reason that, though the Chairperson of the Commission, Dr Dankaka has refuted the allegations, maintaining that she is innocent of the employment racketeering which was also confirmed by the witnesses who, when asked in the hearing, said they are not aware nor know the Chairperson and that Haruna Kolo is the master-mind and the person that has consistently dealt with. They further revealed that it was Kolo that captured them on the IPPIS platform at the Treasury House and they have never dealt with any other personality.

The Amalgamated CSOs have vehemently opposed the treatment meted out to Dr Dankaka, including raising an alarm on what they described as “shoddy treatment of the Executive Chair of the FFC.” This is because, they reasoned that Dr Dankaka’s organization has been solely hijacked, because “there are more to it than meet the eyes.” They asked: “Why has Haruna Kolo not been arrested and prosecuted by now for having worked in three different government institutions at the same time, accumulating large sums of funds in his different accounts as against Civil Financial and extant laws?”

The attempt by the Ad-hoc Committee and disgruntled Commissioners to stampede and coarse Dr Dankaka to submission is unacceptable by well-meaning Nigerians, even when facts emerging from the hearing have spurred the Amalgamated CSOs compelling them to react and do their investigations based on sampled opinions of Nigerians, women groups, petitions from Arewa Women and other groups who are in support of good governance practice and who believe that Dr Dankaka is been with-hunted, innocent of all allegations and the so-called cabal spearheaded by the disgruntled Commissioners from Osun and Lagos states respectively, as well as Haruna Kolo should be stopped at all costs from maligning and mudslinging the leadership of FCC.

Using different scientific and informal methods, the CSOs have joined their voices and stake their integrity on these demands, to say, they must “rat-out” these centripetal forces who, over time, have denied Nigerians employment opportunities and have fleeced them of their hard-earned money. On this premise, “we state categorically that before Dr Dankaka came on board in 2020, 64 illegal recruitments had taken place and appointments given by this same cabal and racketeers. And, out of the said number, 24 had refused to go. Their employment letters were fast-forwarded in order to blackmail Dr Dankaka, who had to set up a disciplinary committee to look into the issue and find them culpable and change immediately the letterheads of the Commission as it was the old letterheads that were being used to issue them with their letters of employment by the cabal.”

The Chairperson has consistently stated that she is innocent, but the cabal and Adhoc Committee would not accept her submission of innocence. Now, the facts are being unveiled which point to the fact that Haruna Kolo is the master-mind of the whole employment racketeering saga.

The Secretary to the Commission that has acted briefly before her assumption is also part of the clandestine plot, doing everything possible to come back to resume business as usual. Before the ascension of Dr Dankaka, the FCC was a market place of sales and racketeering, but she immediately went to work that it was not going to be business as usual, and as such, the hawks descended heavily on her, using every known means to cast aspersions and blackmail her. And when they did not succeed, they co-opted other conspirators in the House to disgrace her out of office. “We make it bold to say that, if she must go, then all the Federal Commissioners, the Secretary of the Commission and others that played a role in the ground plot must be made to also go,” the Amalgamated CSOs insisted.

Accordingly, they observed, “this is not the first such would be happening, as during the President Muhammadu Buhari administration, six Federal Commissioners, including the Osun and Lagos states respectively, were on her jugular and did everything possible to break her down. As President Tinubu assumed office, the duo of Osun and Lagos Commissioners openly accosted Dr Dankaka, saying that the President was their own and they would do everything possible to disgrace her, not knowing that everyone knew where they stood during the elections as anti-Tinubu proponents.”

After thorough investigations, the Amalgamated CSOs found out these revealing empirical evidence:

  • That Hon. Wale Oke and Osun State Federal Commissioner are “gang members” of the larger plot and were the first to raise the issue on the floor of the House and has consistently worked underground to undermine and malign the leadership of FCC, using their media contacts and connect.
  • That the various petitions written to various would-be supporters, including the Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief of Army Staff, have the list of members that attended their clandestine meetings sent to the above offices to show that they are hell-bent on removing her or ask her to step down.
  • That the grand plot was to tarnish her image, cast aspersions on her personality, do consistent media trial and finally tell her to step aside, but facts emerging on daily basis from the hearing strongly suggest that “they will not succeed in their nefarious plans.”
  • Haruna Kolo is a public servant that has been planted by the racketeering cabal for the past 10 years in the Commission.

The Amalgamated CSOs continued, “In view of the foregoing, we therefore call on patriotic Nigerians, the Press and the entire members of the National Assembly (NASS), to disregard, discountenance these machinations in all ramifications. Let the Ad-hoc Committee in particular, or the National Assembly in general, not swallow these allegations line, hook and sinker. Already, a lot of damage has been done to the personality of Dr Dankaka, which has caused her trauma, psychological torture in the eyes of discerning Nigerians and her nucleus family.”

The group has therefore posed these questions: “Why is the Federal Character Commission the main pre-occupation of the Ad-hoc Committee members, while they are supposed to be investigating other MDAs and Parastatals?” Again, “who has Dr Dankaka offended?” or “Who is afraid of her being in the saddle at the FCC?”

“Forcing her to swear on the Holy Quran with her photographs lavishly and prominently published by the press, alone is enough humiliation which should be stopped henceforth,” the Coalition avowed, adding that, “this is a calculated mischief carried too far to smear the Commission, in spite of the many infractions taking place on daily basis in other MDAs.”

They further added: “We condemn, in the strongest terms possible, this lackluster attitude of the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee led by Hon. Yusuf Gagdi,” adding, “He who asks for equity must come with clean hands. You cannot lampoon and bastardize the hard-earned image of the Chairperson of FCC and, at the same time, not allowing her and her loyal and patriotic Commissioners at FCC to respond.”

“We are compelled to react due to the fact that the FCC has been on media trial for the past three weeks with various issues from the Commission dished and served to the Nigerian public by the Ad-hoc Committee and arm-twisting the Management of FCC, not to address the press to rebuff and do a rejoinder of all the unhealthy, bias statements and mischievous fallacies dished to the public,” the CSOs asserted.

The Amalgamated CSOs have therefore passed a vote of confidence on Dr Dankaka for her sacrificial and selfless efforts to reposition and rebrand the FCC and advise her to discountenance herself from the distractions of the Ad-hoc Committee, Federal Commissioners and Secretary to the Commission and concentrate on the task ahead.

Rally round Lokpobiri, Edwin Clark tells Ijaw people

Elder statesman and leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Chief Edwin Clark has called on all sons and daughters of Ijaw nation to support the newly elected leadership of Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, headed by the President, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri.

Clark who expressed joy that the body is now united also noted that the existing unity will further strengthen it in pursuing the interest of the Ijaw nation.

Playing host to Lokpobiri and members of the executive council of IYC in company of Amb. Godknows Igali at his residence in Abuja, the elder statesman urged the new leadership to make efforts to complement the Ijaw National Congress (INC) which he (Clark) sits as the BOT chairman in bringing to Ijaw interest at the front burner in national affairs.

He said, “Unity should be our strength, especially now that they have a presidency that is not divided this time. I think we should all support him.

“From what I have seen so far, I believe he has the personality, he is intelligent enough and he would be able to perform his duty.

“In all that happens, there cannot be two captains in a ship, the president is number one, others follow but he should work with them for the unity of IYC and for the betterment of Ijaw nation”.

Earlier in his remarks, the IYC President, Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri said as young persons, they have drawn inspiration from the doggedness and several sacrifices Chief Edwin Clark has made in protecting Ijaw interest.

While thanking him for the role he has played in the Niger Delta region, Lokpobiri expressed dissatisfaction that most of the promises made to the region through the Presidential Amnesty under the administration of late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua are being jettisoned.

“The challenges that our region and Ijaw nation face have not abated. Today I can tell you for free that the Amnesty Programme that our people laid their lives for, lost our peace in our community, lost our dignity as a people is now sold to people who have no bearing with our struggle.

“Today, those who are meant to manage this programme feel that the programme needs to end by all means necessary and are fighting our people from the basic survival that the programme offers”, he stated.

He expressed disappointment that the building of six mega cities in Niger Delta as proposed by the programme, in order to bridge the infrastructure gap in the region has been discarded.

While expressing gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for nominating an Ijaw son, Heineken Lokpobori as minister, the IYC leader insisted that it was grossly inadequate for a region that has the third largest population and benefactor of the country, calling for inclusion of more Ijaw sons and daughters in the FEC.

Speaking in the same vein, Spokesperson of IYC, Amb. Binebai Princewill said Ijaw people have for years lived in penury in the midst of plenty while strangers come to take the resources of the people, leaving them with nothing.

He vowed that under the Jonathan-led IYC, Ijaw people will participate in the management of the resources from their land.

Subsidy palliative evidence of open-door policy, group passes vote of confidence on Tinubu

The Vehicle Owners Association of Nigeria (VOAN) has hailed Federal Government’s subsidy removal palliatives policy, describing it as the best way to directly affect lives of Nigeria masses.

VOAN, which is the umbrella body of the organized Vehicle Owners in Nigeria both in the public and private sector, in a statement made available to the media Thursday, advised Nigerians that the subsidy removal and palliative measures are possibly the only way out of the immediate economic situation in Nigeria.

The statement, which was jointly signed by Vincent Odo Okoko and Makinde Oluwole, the association Secretary General and President indicated that President Tinubu’s subsidy removal remains an open-door policy, which is evidenced by his numerous engagements with Nigerians through the Nigeria Labour Congress – NLC, Trade Union Congress – TUC and many other stakeholders without the usual bureaucratic hindrances and bottle-necks.

The statement, further read in parts, “Your timely formation of the government with nominations of potential ministers whose lists are before the National Assembly, your leadership of the ECOWAS and the enhanced security of lives and properties within the country away from the incessant killings by bandits, kidnappers and armed robbers as witnessed in the recent past.

“in specific terms, your promise to Nigerians to kick-start the rehabilitation of the moribund Nigeria Oil Refineries, your promise to name and possibly prosecute the saboteurs among the oil importers and your promise to activate the presidential committee on wage negotiation with the Labour bodies are welcome developments. Furthermore, your promise to make thousands of Buses available along with soft loans to transport operators to ease the suffering of Nigerians was received with excitement.

“in the light of the above however, it is common knowledge that in the past, these types of laudable initiatives or palliatives were hijacked by some unscrupulous elements or many a time marred by cronyism or outright frustration of the efforts of the government by the faulty process and procedure adopted by the relevant agencies.

“VOAN as a public advocate for the welfare of Nigerians through the transportation system cannot fold its arms or watch helplessly as these set of people would once again position themselves to sabotage all the government efforts this time with the expected huge financial resources that shall be made available to the economy through these palliatives. VOAN also cannot watch while these set of people who do not mean well for Nigeria take on the good intentions of the government and at the end of the day make Nigerians begin to curse their leaders who may be oblivious of the activities of these saboteurs.

“This is because folding our arms will amount to gross dereliction of social responsibility of the Association, patriotism and nationalism. As stated by Frantz Fanon “every onlooker is either a coward or a traitor”. VOAN is neither an Association of cowards nor traitors and we stand solidly behind Mr. President to ensure that our members and the entire transportation community get the expected benefits.

“We plead with Mr. President to ensure that whoever must benefit from the transportation palliatives as promised by your good self should first obtain a letter of comfort or clearance, from our office. This will enable us carry-out due diligence and run a background check on such individuals or body corporate to ensure that they are genuine, viable and have the capacity to manage the vehicles or loan facility for the benefit of Nigerians.

“This also will allow us to monitor usage and report abuses. Furthermore, this arrangement will enable VOAN to use group pressure to recover the automobile loan when there is a default by any vehicle owner or beneficiary. This is aimed at protecting the Federal Government’s scheme and ensures the sustainability of the good intention of the government into the indefinite future. Please accept the assurances of our highest respect and esteem regards at all times.”
