Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has affirmed that local government elections scheduled for October 5 will go ahead, despite protests from supporters of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Loyalists from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have voiced their opposition, citing irregularities and legal challenges.

Fubara stressed the importance of adhering to a Supreme Court ruling that mandates elected officials to oversee local governments. He expressed frustration over the protests, stating that similar elections have been successfully conducted in other states using the 2023 voter register without controversy.

In response to a Federal High Court injunction against the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and ongoing demonstrations led by notable Wike supporters, Fubara remains resolute in proceeding with the elections. Meanwhile, Wike’s supporters, including lawmakers and former officials, continue to call for compliance with the court’s directive, raising concerns about possible unrest if the elections are carried out as planned.
